The Best Vanilla Buttercream Frosting

The Best Vanilla Buttercream Frosting is a smooth, creamy icing made by combining softly whipped unsalted butter, powdered sugar, pure vanilla extract, and heavy cream or whole milk. This buttercream achieves a spreadable to pipeable texture ideal for cakes and cupcakes. Its sweet vanilla flavor and rich mouthfeel complement various baked goods.

Description

This frosting starts by beating softened unsalted butter until creamy, then gradually incorporating powdered sugar to form a fluffy base. Pure vanilla extract and a controlled amount of heavy cream or milk are added last to adjust consistency according to use—thicker for piping or thinner for spreading. The resulting vanilla buttercream has a velvety texture and sweet, classic flavor that works well atop layered cakes or cupcakes.

Its simple ingredient list and adaptable consistency make it a versatile frosting for different decorating techniques. The frosting has enough structure to hold shapes if piped but remains smooth to spread evenly.

The quantity prepared suits a two-layer 8-inch cake or about a dozen cupcakes; adjustments in volume and consistency can be made depending on application needs.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup butter softened, unsalted, 2 sticks
  • 4.5 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon vanilla extract pure
  • 4-5 Tablespoons heavy whipping cream or whole milk

Instructions

  1. Beat the softened butter over medium speed with an electric mixer until soft and creamy. Continue to beat over medium speed as you gradually add the powdered sugar. Stop the mixer and scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula as needed to fully incorporate all of the sugar.
  2. Once butter and sugar have come together, add the vanilla. Beat in the heavy cream or milk 1 Tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is reached. This frosting is perfect for piping, or for simply spreading onto cakes and cupcakes!

Notes

  • This frosting amount covers a two-layer eight-inch cake and roughly 12 cupcakes when piped.
  • Adjust the amount of heavy cream or milk to achieve the consistency you prefer for spreading or piping.
