The Most Amazing Texas Sheet Cake

The Most Amazing Texas Sheet Cake is a rich chocolate dessert baked in a single large 13x18 inch pan. The cake batter combines cocoa powder with flour, sugar, eggs, buttermilk, and oil, creating a moist, tender crumb. The recipe includes a chocolate frosting made with butter, cocoa, buttermilk, powdered sugar, vanilla, and chopped pecans, which is poured warm over the cooled cake, giving it a luscious finish with a slight crunch from the nuts. This cake is ideal for gatherings and can be served sliced with coffee or milk.

Description

This Texas Sheet Cake features a chocolate batter that is easy to prepare by mixing dry ingredients like flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, and salt with wet ingredients including eggs, buttermilk, warm water, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Baking in a large rectangular sheet pan creates a thin, evenly baked cake with a tender texture. After cooling slightly, the cake is topped with a warm chocolate frosting. The frosting is prepared by melting butter, whisking in cocoa powder, then simmering with buttermilk before mixing in powdered sugar and vanilla. Chopped pecans or walnuts are sprinkled over the frosting, adding texture and nutty flavor.

The cake serves well as a dessert for multiple people, great for parties or family meals where a large portion is needed. Its moist crumb and the rich, creamy frosting complement each other to create a classic comfort chocolate cake.

  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder unsweetened
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 egg
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup water warm
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

FROSTING

  • 1/2 cup butter salted
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder unsweetened
  • 1/3 cup buttermilk
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup pecans or walnuts, chopped

Instructions

FOR THE CAKE

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a 13x18 inch baking sheet.
  2. In a large mixing bowl stir together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add eggs, buttermilk, warm water, oil, and vanilla. Whisk until combined and batter is smooth. This should take just a couple of minutes. Pour batter into prepared baking sheet.
  4. Bake for 20-25 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack for 15 minutes before frosting.

FOR THE FROSTING

  1. Melt butter in a medium-sized saucepan over low heat. Whisk in cocoa powder, then pour in buttermilk. Increase heat to medium high and bring to a simmer, whisking constantly.
  2. Once the mixture is simmering, remove from the heat and whisk in powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth. Pour over cake to cover. Use a rubber spatula to smooth out and spread if needed. Sprinkle on chopped pecans. Let the cake and frosting cool completely before cutting and serving.
