Thumbprint Cookies
Description
Thumbprint Cookies deliver a classic treat featuring buttery, tender cookie bases and fruity centers of jam. The recipe calls for softened butter mixed with sugar, salt, vanilla, and flour until crumbly, then shaped into balls pressed to create an indentation filled with jam before baking. The cookies bake quickly at 350 degrees until puffed and lightly golden beneath, preserving a soft texture. Adding a glaze of powdered sugar thinned with milk after cooling provides a thin, sweet topping. Simple to assemble yet distinctive in form, these cookies offer a balance of buttery dough and jam sweetness.
The method emphasizes gentle mixing and using warmth from hands to bring the dough together without melting the butter fully. This ensures a tender crumb. Pressing the indentation carefully without flattening the dough balls lets the jam stay in place during baking. The resulting cookies can be served at room temperature, making them ideal for gatherings or casual snacking. The basic jam choice can vary to customize flavor.
