Tomato Pizza
Description
This Tomato Pizza uses either store-bought or homemade pizza dough and sauce, topped with slices of both regular and cherry tomatoes layered under a generous amount of shredded mozzarella cheese. A sprinkle of pizza seasoning enhances the toppings, while fresh basil adds a herbal freshness once baked. The crust is rolled to about 14-15 inches with edges folded for a defined crust border.
Baking at 500°F, preferably on a preheated pizza stone or a greased baking sheet, develops a golden crust with tender, melted cheese and lightly cooked tomatoes that retain some freshness and juiciness. Rotating the pizza midway through baking ensures even heat distribution for uniform cooking.
This pizza can be served as a casual meal or snack, with the balance of melted cheese and fresh tomato favorites. Leftovers can be wrapped tightly for refrigeration or freezing and reheated in an oven for best texture.
Freezing the pie pre-baked with sauce and cheese allows for future quick meal preparation. Thaw and add fresh tomato slices before the final bake.
Ingredients
- 16 ounces pizza dough store bought or Homemade Pizza Dough
- ½ cup pizza sauce store bought or homemade Pizza Sauce Recipe
- 2-3 tomato sliced
- ¼ cup cherry tomato
- ½ teaspoon pizza seasoning
- 2-3 cups mozzarella cheese shredded
- basil sliced, fresh
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 500°F. If using a pizza stone, place it on the bottom rack while the oven is preheating (at least 15 minutes).
- Make the Pizza Sauce Recipe and Homemade Pizza Dough if going homemade. If you are using store-bought, skip this step.
- Roll out the pizza dough on a lightly floured surface to about 14-15 inches in diameter. Fold edges for more of a crust.
- If using a pizza stone, quickly and carefully transfer the dough to your stone, add the sauce (leaving a little around the edges for a crust), cheese, tomatoes, and pizza seasonings. Put in the oven.
- If not using a stone, add the rolled-out dough to a lightly greased baking sheet. Add sauce, cheese, toppings and bake.
- Bake for about 5 minutes, then rotate the pizza and bake an additional 7-8 minutes or until crust is golden and cheese is melted. Garnish with fresh basil.
Notes
- Freeze pizza after blind baking the crust with sauce and cheese for 4–5 months; thaw before adding fresh tomato slices and baking.
- Wrap leftover pizza in foil or airtight containers; refrigerate up to 3 days or freeze for 1–2 months, reheating in oven or microwave.
