Tuna Mayo Rice Balls

Tuna Mayo Rice Balls combine cooked sushi rice with canned tuna, sesame oil, mayonnaise, and shredded roasted seaweed. The mixture is shaped into neat balls or triangles, holding a creamy and slightly savory flavor with hints of nuttiness from the sesame oil and the umami of seaweed. These rice balls make a convenient snack or light meal, easily prepared by mixing and forming without additional cooking after combining the ingredients.

Description

Tuna Mayo Rice Balls bring together soft, sticky sushi rice blended with tuna and Japanese-style mayonnaise, creating a creamy, flavorful filling. The addition of sesame oil adds a subtle nuttiness, while shredded roasted seaweed introduces a savory, briny note. The recipe instructs mixing all ingredients thoroughly, then shaping the mixture into either triangular shapes or round balls, depending on preference. This approach produces a hand-held snack with a balanced texture of tender rice and smooth mayo-tuna filling. It requires no baking or further cooking once formed, making it straightforward to assemble. These rice balls are suitable for casual meals or portable snacks, offering a mild and satisfying combination of ingredients familiar in Japanese cuisine.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 cups sushi rice cooked
  • 150 gram tuna canned
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 2-3 tbsp mayonnaise kewpie, Japanese style
  • 1-1½ cup seaweed shredded, roasted

Instructions

  1. To a large bowl, add the rice, sesame oil, mayo, tuna, and seaweed.
  2. Mix until everything is combined. Add more mayo if needed.
  3. Press down the mixture and use a spatula to “cut” the rice into 8 triangles, like you cut a pizza. Alternatively, you can simply eyeball the amount of rice mixture you use per ball.
  4. With clean hands or while wearing gloves, roll up each portion into a ball. Serve immediately.
