Tuna Pasta Salad with Peas

Tuna Pasta Salad with Peas combines tender mini shell pasta, green peas, diced red onion, and chunk light tuna in a lemony dill mayonnaise dressing. The pasta and peas are cooked together for convenience and freshness, then cooled before mixing with the dressing. The salad is creamy with a subtle tang and herbaceous note from the dill, offering a balanced cold dish ideal for light meals or sides.

Description

This salad begins with a dressing made from mayonnaise, lemon juice, dried dill, salt, and freshly cracked black pepper, providing a creamy and slightly tangy base. Pasta is cooked until nearly tender, then peas are added to finish cooking simultaneously, ensuring both are soft yet still hold shape. After draining and cooling the pasta and peas, they are combined with diced red onion and chunk light tuna for texture and protein.

The combined ingredients are folded gently into the dressing for even coating without breaking the pasta. The salad can be served immediately for a fresher taste or chilled to meld flavors. It makes a straightforward, no-cook side or quick light meal suitable for warm weather or packed lunches.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3/4 cup mayonnaise $0.92
  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice $0.12
  • 1/4 tsp dill $0.03, dried
  • ¾ tsp salt $0.05
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper $0.02, freshly cracked
  • 1/2 cup red onion $0.11, diced
  • 1 cup peas $0.47, frozen
  • 12 oz. mini shell pasta $1.13
  • 2 oz. cans light tuna $1.98, chunk, drained

Instructions

  1. Make the dressing first. Combine the mayonnaise, lemon juice, dill, salt, and pepper in a bowl, then set the dressing aside.
  2. Finely dice the red onion and measure out the frozen peas.
  3. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, add the pasta and continue to boil until it's almost fully tender (about 5-6 minutes), then add the frozen peas. Continue to cook the pasta and peas together for the last minute or two, or until the pasta is fully tender. Drain the pasta and peas well in a colander, allowing them to cool.
  4. Once the pasta and peas are well drained and mostly cooled, transfer them to a large bowl. Add the diced red onion, drained tuna, and prepared dressing. Fold the ingredients together until everything is evenly combined and coated in dressing. Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to eat.
