Turkey Bolognese Recipe

Turkey Bolognese features shredded cooked turkey simmered with aromatic vegetables and herbs in a marinara sauce, served over spaghetti noodles. The sauce develops layers of herbaceous and savory flavors with thyme, oregano, and basil. The mix of white and dark turkey meat provides a lean, yet rich texture. Tossed with spaghetti and topped with fresh basil and Parmesan cheese, it becomes a hearty and comforting pasta dish.

Description

This Turkey Bolognese recipe begins by sautéing onions, carrots, and celery until soft, creating a flavorful vegetable base. Garlic adds a fragrant note before cooked turkey meat is incorporated. Cooking with marinara sauce and dried herbs like thyme, oregano, and basil lets the flavors meld over 10-15 minutes on low heat, deepening the sauce’s taste.

The sauce is served with spaghetti cooked al dente, which is tossed in the sauce to coat the noodles evenly. Fresh chopped basil adds brightness while grated Parmesan cheese provides a salty, nutty finish. This combination balances lean turkey protein with vegetable and tomato flavors for a filling meal.

Simple and straightforward, this dish suits a home-cooked dinner where a satisfying pasta with rich sauce is desired. It can be served with a side salad or garlic bread if desired.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 onion medium, chopped
  • 1 carrot large, peeled and chopped
  • 1 celery stalk, chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 pound turkey I use a mixture of white and dark meat, shredded, cooked
  • 1 marinara sauce 24 oz jar, prefer Rao's brand
  • 1/2 teaspoon thyme dried
  • 1 teaspoon oregano dried
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons basil dried
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • 12 oz spaghetti noodles
  • basil for garnish, chopped, fresh
  • Parmesan Cheese for garnish, grated

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a dutch oven or soup pot over medium-high heat. Add the onions, carrots, and celery, and cook until vegetables are tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add the turkey meat and cook for another minute, mixing all the ingredients well.
  2. Reduce heat to medium-low and stir in the marinara sauce, thyme, oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring often for 10-15 minutes so that the flavors can blend.
  3. While sauce cooks, make the spaghetti. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil, and cook spaghetti according to package directions. Drain, reserving a cup of the cooking liquid.
  4. Add the cooked spaghetti to the large pot of sauce and stir well, evenly coating the noodles. Sprinkle with chopped fresh basil and parmesan cheese. Enjoy!
