Turkey Meatloaf

This Turkey Meatloaf uses ground turkey mixed with sautéed onion, breadcrumbs, and seasonings including marjoram and kosher salt. It is baked with a tangy ketchup and Worcestershire sauce topping that adds moistness and flavor. The result is a lean, hearty meatloaf with a balanced texture that holds together well for slicing.

Description

The Turkey Meatloaf combines 93% or 99% lean ground turkey with minced sautéed onion, whole wheat breadcrumbs, egg, and seasonings. A ketchup and Worcestershire sauce mixture is added both into the meat mixture and spooned as a glaze on top before baking, which helps retain moisture and adds savory-sweet notes. Baking at 350°F for about one hour yields a firm loaf with a browned exterior and tender interior.

Marjoram gives a subtle herbal nuance to the otherwise mild turkey meat, complementing the onions and ketchup glaze. The whole wheat breadcrumbs provide structure, ensuring the meatloaf is not dense or crumbly. Oven timing and resting the meatloaf after baking allow juices to redistribute for better slicing.

This turkey meatloaf is suitable for a protein-focused dinner and pairs well with mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, or a green salad. Using ground turkey makes it leaner than traditional beef meatloaf, while preserving the comforting flavor and texture expected in this dish.

Notes

  • This recipe uses 99% lean turkey for a leaner meatloaf option; 93% lean can also be used for more moisture.
  • Sauté the onions until translucent to soften their flavor before mixing.
  • Allow the meatloaf to rest 5 minutes after baking to help with slicing.
