Turkey Meatloaf Recipe

This turkey meatloaf combines lean ground turkey with finely sautéed onions, bread crumbs, and a ketchup-based sauce for a moist and tender texture. The Worcestershire sauce adds a subtle depth to the flavor, while the brown sugar-ketchup topping gives a balanced sweetness and glaze. It's a straightforward recipe designed for baking in one loaf and sliced for easy serving at family meals or casual dinners.

Description

Turkey Meatloaf Recipe features ground turkey mixed with sautéed onions, egg, milk, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and breadcrumbs to bind the loaf. After mixing gently to avoid toughness, the meat mixture is formed into a loaf and baked. A topping made from ketchup and brown sugar is added mid-cooking to create a glossy, sweet finish. This method ensures a meatloaf with a tender interior and flavorful crust.

The baking process involves initial cooking followed by topping application and additional baking to set the glaze. The use of Worcestershire sauce enriches the overall flavor subtly without overpowering the turkey’s mildness. The topping balances savory and sweet, giving a familiar comfort food note.

The meatloaf can be served sliced with sides like mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables. Practical considerations include variations with different ground meats or breadcrumb types, plus freezing instructions for leftover storage. The recommended storage time in the refrigerator is up to four days, ensuring safe and convenient meal planning.

Ingredients

Servings

Meatloaf Ingredients:

  • ½ tbsp neutral cooking oil generic cooking oil
  • ½ yellow onion finely diced
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • ½ cup bread crumbs
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper

Meatloaf Topping Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • ½ tbsp brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Heat oil in a small frying pan over medium heat and add the diced onions to the pan. Saute until soft and translucent - about 5 minutes. Remove from heat.
  2. In a large mixing bowl whisk together egg, milk, ketchup and worcestershire sauce.
  3. Add the ground turkey, bread crumbs, sauteed onions, salt and pepper to the bowl. Use clean hands to mix together until just combined - do not overmix, this will make the meatloaf tough.
  4. Pour mixture onto the lined baking sheet and form into a loaf shape with clean hands. Place in the oven and bake for 45 minutes.
  5. While that bakes, whisk together the ketchup and brown sugar for topping.
  6. After 45 minutes, remove the meatloaf from the oven and spread the sauce over the top. Return to the oven to bake for another 10 minutes.
  7. Remove and cool for at least 5 minutes before slicing.

Notes

  • Ground turkey can be substituted with ground chicken, pork, beef, or a combination.
  • Freeze fully cooked meatloaf tightly wrapped for up to three months.
  • Use gluten-free breadcrumbs if needed to accommodate dietary restrictions.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator and consume within four days.
