Turkish Orzo Rice Recipe

Turkish orzo rice is toasted in butter, boiled in Turkish seasoning, and steamed until light and fluffy — all in less than 30 minutes!

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1/3 cup orzo pasta
  • 1 cup long-grain rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tsp Turkish spice blend optional

Lemon Mint Sauce

  • 1/4 cup lemon juice fresh
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup mint chopped, fresh
  • 1/4 cup parsley chopped, flat leaf, fresh
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan with lid, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the orzo and toast, stirring until browned.
  2. Add the rice, water, salt and seasoning. Stir to mix and bring to a boil.
  3. Turn heat to low, cover and steam for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and rest 10 minutes. Fluff with fork prior to serving.
  4. Add all sauce ingredients together and stir to combine.
  5. Serve with optional Lemon Mint Sauce spooned on top.

Notes

  • Orzo Rice recipe adapted from Rick Stein's From Venice to Istanbul.
  • Nutritional information for orzo rice only.
  • For leftovers, let the rice cool completely and transfer to an airtight container or sealable bag and squeeze out excess air. Freeze for up to 2 months. To thaw, let come to room temp, add a tablespoon of water, cover and steam in microwave for 2-3 minutes on high heat. Fluff with fork and enjoy.
