Unagi Nigiri (BBQ Eel Sushi)
Description
This Unagi Nigiri recipe uses pre-grilled BBQ eel cut into bite-sized portions placed atop small oblong mounds of warm sushi rice. The rice is hand-formed to a compact shape, ensuring the nigiri holds together without being overly dense. A light brush of unagi sauce enhances the eel's caramelized flavor. Wrapping a nori strip around each piece provides subtle chewiness and helps keep the eel and rice in place.
Toasted sesame seeds sprinkled on top add mild nuttiness and a slight crunch, complementing the glazed eel. The combination offers a balance of textures and flavors typical in Japanese nigiri sushi.
Ingredients
- 1 pkg unagi about 6-8 oz, eel; BBQ grilled
- 1 C sushi rice warm, cooked
- 2 tablespoon unagi sauce
- nori seaweed; strips
- sesame seeds toasted
Instructions
- If the unagi is whole, use a sharp knife to cut it into equal pieces about 1" in diameter, about 10-12g each.
- Wet your hands and form about 15g of the sushi rice into small oblong shaped pieces.
- Place the grilled eel on top of the rice. Lightly brush the top of the eel with unagi sauce.
- Take a strip of nori and wrap it around the middle.
- Sprinkle toasted sesame seeds over the top of the eel.
- Repeat with the remainder.
