Valentines Cookies

Valentines Cookies combine both granulated and brown sugars with butter and vegetable oil to create a balanced dough that holds 3 cups of all-purpose flour and a generous amount of M&Ms in red, pink, and white. The cookies bake quickly at 350°F and are topped with whole M&Ms, contributing to a colorful, slightly crisp exterior with a soft, chewy interior. Chilling the dough helps maintain the cookie shape by keeping the butter cold, preventing excessive spreading during baking.

Description

Valentines Cookies are sweet treats made with a double sugar blend and a mix of butter and vegetable oil, which contributes to their texture. Red, pink, and white M&Ms—both chopped and whole—are folded into the dough and placed on top before baking, giving the cookies a festive look and a candy crunch punctuating the soft crumb. Baking at 350°F for just 7-8 minutes ensures the cookies set quickly while retaining chewiness.

The dough benefits from chilling if it becomes too warm to prevent spreading, resulting in thicker, more defined cookies. Serving these cookies fresh preserves the contrast between the soft interior and the candy texture. They store well at room temperature in an airtight container, where placing a piece of white bread inside helps keep them moist. The dough can be refrigerated for a short time or frozen for longer storage, which is handy for preparing ahead or making batches over time.

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups M&Ms red, pink & white, chopped and whole, separated, plain

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Cream together brown sugar, granulated sugar, butter, and oil.
  3. Add eggs and beat until fluffy.
  4. Add flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and vanilla.
  5. Mix in 1½ cups chopped M&Ms {or however many you want}.
  6. Place in balls on a greased pan, and insert 5 M&Ms on top.
  7. Bake at 350°F for 7-8 minutes.

Notes

  • Keep the dough and butter cold by chilling before baking to prevent the cookies from spreading too thin.
  • Store dough wrapped tightly in plastic wrap in the refrigerator for 1-2 days or freeze for up to 3-4 months for convenience.
  • Airtight storage with a piece of white bread helps maintain cookie softness for 4-5 days at room temperature.
