Valentine's Day Cake Balls Recipe

Report
This recipe transforms a simple cake mix and frosting into small, handheld cake balls coated in white and dark baking chocolate. The cake is crumbled and mixed with frosting to form smooth 1-inch balls, chilled for firmness, then dipped in melted chocolate and decorated with Valentine-themed sprinkles. The result is a festive, bite-sized treat combining the soft sweetness of cake with the crisp snap of chocolate coating.

Description

Valentine's Day Cake Balls are made by baking a boxed cake mix, crumbling the cooled cake, and thoroughly mixing it with frosting to create a moldable dough. Shaped into uniform balls and refrigerated, they gain firmness for dipping. The chocolate coating, prepared by melting white and dark baking chocolate carefully to avoid burning, encases each ball with a smooth shell. Finally, festive sprinkles add color and occasion-appropriate decoration. This method produces rich, creamy cake centers with a delicate chocolate exterior.

The combination of cake mix and frosting allows for flexibility in choosing flavors, while the dual chocolate coating adds textural contrast. These petite confections are well suited to party platters or gifting during Valentine's Day or other celebrations.

For best results, ensure the cake balls are evenly chilled before dipping to prevent cracking. Use a tablespoon scoop to maintain consistent sizes, and roll the balls smoothly between hands to avoid rough edges. Store refrigerated to keep the chocolate coating intact and the cake fresh.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cake mix usually water, egg and oil, box and ingredients to make cake
  • 1 frosting of your choice or vanilla buttercream frosting
  • 12 ounces white baking chocolate
  • 12 ounces baking chocolate dark
  • Sprinkles valentine

Instructions

  1. Bake cake according to package directions and cool completely.
  2. Slice cake into small pieces and place into a mixing bowl.
  3. Break apart large pieces with a spoon. Add about 3/4 tub of frosting and mix well.
  4. You may need to use your hands for this. If mixture seems dry and won't shape into a ball, add more frosting.
  5. Place wax paper onto a baking sheet or cutting board and clear a space in your refrigerator.
  6. Shape cake into 1" balls, using a tablespoon portion scoop is the easiest way, just make sure you roll the balls smooth with the palms of your hand.
  7. Place onto prepared pan and refrigerate for 1 hour.
  8. Heat chocolate by breaking it apart and placing it into a bowl.
  9. Heat for 2 minutes on 50% power, stirring every 30 seconds until melted.
  10. Dip cake bites into chocolate. I like to place mine upside down and then flip them over to coat them and remove them.
  11. Place onto another baking sheet lined with wax paper.
  12. Sprinkle with valentine sprinkles and refrigerate for chocolate to firm up.
  13. Makes 60-70 cake bites
  14. These also freeze well.

Notes

  • Use a tablespoon scoop to form uniform cake balls that bake evenly.
  • Chill the shaped balls thoroughly to help the chocolate coating adhere smoothly.
  • Handle the dipped balls gently to avoid cracking the chocolate shell.
  • Store the finished cake balls in the refrigerator to maintain texture and freshness.
