Valentine's Day Layered Jello Cups
Description
This dessert assembles layers by alternating plain Jello with Jello mixed with Cool Whip, creating a combination of firm and creamy textures. Each layer is individually prepared by dissolving gelatin packets in boiling water and then cooling with cold water. The creamy layers add softness and richness contrasted by the firmer gelatin layers, resulting in a light, chilled dessert.
Layering is done by allowing each Jello layer to set in the refrigerator before adding the next, ensuring distinct bands of color and texture. Garnishes like whipped cream, fresh berries, and sprinkles add visual interest and extra flavor at serving.
These cups suit festive occasions, especially themed around Valentine's Day with their red and pink colors. They can be prepared in advance, refrigerated until serving, and customized by varying the number of layers or toppings.
Shortening the layering steps by combining fewer layers produces thicker, easier-to-manage portions without greatly changing taste. Leftovers can be wrapped and refrigerated for a few days maintaining freshness.
Ingredients
- 4 oz packages of Jello red and pink colored
- oz Cool Whip extra creamy
- Whipped Cream optional topping
- fresh berries optional garnish
- Sprinkles optional garnish
Instructions
- Make one package Jello according to directions on box, typically combining packet with one cup boiling water and one cup cold water.
- Divide the Jello between four cups and place it in the fridge to set, about an hour.
- Make another package of Jello according to the instructions on the box. Once you’ve combined the jello with the water, fold in eight ounces of the cool whip until it’s nice and creamy. Then once the first layer is set, divide your second jello mixture into four and pour it over the first layer and let it set – another hour or so.
- Repeat steps 1-3 again to create layers 3 and 4. Layer 3 will be plain jello and layer 4 will be jello mixed with Cool Whip.
- Garnish with whipped cream, fresh berries, and sprinkles.
Notes
- Prepare the layered Jello cups up to 24 hours ahead, excluding whipped cream and fresh garnishes which should be added just before serving.
- Reduce the number of layers if desired by making two or three thicker layers instead of four for a quicker preparation.
- Store leftovers refrigerated wrapped in plastic; reapply garnishes before serving again within three days.
