Valentine's Day Pretzels

Valentine's Day Pretzels feature mini pretzels topped with softened caramel and sandwiched together, then dipped in melted candy melts in festive colors. The combination of salty, sweet, chewy caramel and crunchy pretzel coated with colored chocolate creates a textured treat suitable for holiday gifting or celebrations. Optional sprinkles add a decorative finish.

Description

This recipe starts by softening halved caramels on mini pretzels in the oven, then sandwiching the pretzels together with the caramel acting as a sticky center. After cooling, the pretzel sandwiches are dipped in melted candy melts in various colors, sometimes thinned with coconut oil for smoothness. Coating two-thirds of the pretzels in the colored chocolate provides a sweet and uniform shell. Drizzles of additional colored melts are piped over the coated pretzels for decoration, and festive sprinkles can be added.

The pretzels offer a salty crunch while the caramel center and candy coating provide sweetness and chew. Preparing these treats is suitable for making ahead and gifting. The recipe is festive and involves simple steps ideal for involving children in safe parts of the process.

Storing in an airtight container at room temperature preserves freshness for up to five days before the pretzels become stale. Using tall, wide containers to melt the candy melts makes dipping easier and cleaner.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 48 mini pretzels
  • 12 oft caramels
  • 3 cup s Candy Melts 1 cup each in 3 different colors
  • 1-2 TBS coconut oil (if needed)
  • Sprinkles optional garnish, Valentine's Day themed

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Lay 24 pretzels out on the baking sheet in a single layer.
  3. Unwrap caramels, cut each in half, then place 1/2 a caramel on each pretzel. Bake for about 5 minutes, just until the caramels are softened.
  4. Remove from oven and immediately place a pretzel on top of each caramel, pressing down slightly so they stick to the caramel. Allow to cool completely on the baking sheet.
  5. Place purple melts in a microwave safe bowl and melt for 30 seconds, then stir. Repeat until completely melted and smooth. Add 1/2-1 teaspoon of coconut oil if needed for a good consistency. Repeat for white and pink candy melts.
  6. Dip the caramel pretzels in the melted chocolate until they are about 2/3 covered. Repeat until all caramel pretzels are dipped in chocolate.
  7. Take remaining chocolate and place each color in a separate piping bag or small baggie with the corner snipped off. Drizzle each color over dipped caramel pretzels. Immediately sprinkle with Valentine's sprinkles, then allow to cool completely before serving.

Notes

  • Melt candy melts in a tall, wide container for easier dipping of pretzels.
  • Tap each dipped pretzel gently after dipping to remove excess candy for a cleaner finish.
  • Children can help with placing pretzels on baking sheets, adding caramel, and decorating, but avoid dipping to prevent burns.
  • Store pretzels in an airtight container at room temperature up to five days; they will become stale afterward.
