Valentine's Day Sugar Cookies
Description
This recipe yields tender sugar cookies made with both butter and cream cheese, which helps keep them soft. Almond extract adds a light nutty flavor complementing the sweetness. The dough is mixed and rolled out to about 3/8 inch thickness for soft cookies; thinner dough can make crunchier cookies. Baking at 375°F for 8-10 minutes ensures the cookies hold their shape without overbrowning.
The frosting combines butter, powdered sugar, milk, and almond and vanilla extracts to create a smooth, spreadable icing. Coloring the frosting pink and red and decorating with gel and sprinkles adds a festive Valentine's look. Letting the frosting harden before storing prevents smudging.
These cookies make a thoughtful gift or party treat during Valentine's Day celebrations. The soft texture and sweet almond notes make them easy to enjoy alongside tea or milk.
Dough can be chilled for 1-2 days or frozen in advance, allowing flexible prep time. Store baked cookies in airtight containers at room temperature for up to 5 days or freeze for longer storage. If frosted, allow icing to set fully before stacking.

- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon almond extract
- 2¾ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
Frosting
- ⅓ cup butter softened
- 4½ cups powdered sugar
- ¼ cup milk
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon almond extract
Topping
- decorating gel red and pink, Valentines
- Sprinkles red and pink, Valentines
Instructions
Cookie
- Preheat oven to 375°F
- Cream butter, cream cheese, granulated sugar, powdered sugar, egg, and almond extract in a large mixing bowl (or Kitchen-Aid) until fluffy.
- In a separate medium bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Add dry ingredients to the creamed mixture. Stir until soft dough forms.
- Roll out and cut with a cookie cutter. Thin dough will make crunchy cookies. If you want a soft dough, it needs to be about ⅜ in. {NOTE: Try not to handle the dough too much}
- Bake for 8-10 minutes on a greased pan. Let cool on a wire rack.
Frost and Decorate
- Mix all ingredients with a hand mixer. If too thick, add a tad more milk.
- Frost the cookies with pink and red frosting.
- Use the decorating gel to add texture to the hearts. Sprinkle with red and pink sugar sprinkles and let set to harden before gifting or delivering.
Notes
- You can wrap and chill the dough in the fridge for 1-2 days before baking to improve handling and flavor development.
- Dough also freezes well; thaw completely before rolling and baking.
- Store baked cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
- Let frosting set hard on the cookies before stacking or packaging to prevent damage to decorations.
