Valentine’s Swirl Cake

This cake combines white cake batter and strawberry-flavored batter swirled together in a fluted tube pan to create a visually appealing red and white swirl pattern. Finished with white frosting alternately drizzled plain and tinted pink with gel food coloring, the result is a festive dessert featuring balanced sweetness and a soft, moist crumb. The swirl effect relies on layering batters rather than extensive mixing, producing a marbled look that fits the Valentine's Day theme.

Description

The Valentine’s Swirl Cake uses a boxed white cake mix divided into two portions, one of which is mixed with strawberry gelatin powder to add color and flavor. The batters are layered alternately in a well-greased fluted tube pan to create the swirl effect. After baking according to the cake mix instructions and cooling, the cake is frosted with white icing divided into two portions: one left plain and the other tinted pink with gel food coloring. Both frostings are lightly warmed and drizzled over the cake to complete the look.

The cake is soft and sweet with strawberry undertones in the colored portion, contrasted with the classic white cake flavor. It fits well as a themed dessert for Valentine's Day or celebrations where a decorated, marbled cake is desired.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 white cake mix box plus ingredients to prepare cake
  • 1 Tbsp strawberry jello
  • 1 white frosting container
  • pink gel food coloring

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to temperature on cake mix. Generously grease a fluted tube cake pan. Make cake batter according to directions on box.
  2. Pour 1/2 of the batter into a small bowl; stir 1 Tbsp strawberry jello into cake mix until well mixed.
  3. Pour 1/2 of the red cake batter into bottom of pan. Carefully pour remaining white batter over red batter. Top with the rest of the red batter. The red batter will not completely cover the white batter.
  4. Bake as directed on box. Cool cake 5 minutes. Flip out of pan onto cooling rack and cool cake completely.
  5. When cake is cooled, divide the frosting evenly into 2 microwaveable bowls. Microwave 1 bowl of frosting on high a few seconds until smooth enough to drizzle over cake. With spoon, drizzle all of the 1st bowl of microwaved frosting over the cake. Repeat microwaving second bowl. Stir in the pink gel food coloring. Drizzle over cake. *Note you do not need to use all the frosting!
  6. Let the cake stand until frosting is set. Enjoy!
