Vanilla Buttercream Frosting
Description
The Vanilla Buttercream Frosting is prepared by whipping room temperature unsalted butter until fluffy, gradually incorporating sifted powdered sugar on low speed to avoid dust clouds, then whipping in vanilla extract. The final mixture is whipped at medium-high speed until light and fluffy, resulting in a smooth, spreadable frosting. This frosting works well on cupcakes, sheet cakes, or layered cakes and can be easily tinted for different designs. The inclusion of a pinch of salt helps balance the sweetness. While a stand mixer speeds up preparation, a hand mixer can be used too.
Adjust quantities to scale frosting for different batch sizes, and consider doubling the recipe for larger cakes or to have extra for filling. For variations, vanilla bean paste or vanilla bean seeds can replace extract. Gel food coloring is recommended to maintain frosting texture when adding color. Piping tips such as Ateco #828 or #808 can be used for professional-style decoration.
Ingredients
- 1 cup butter at room temperature, unsalted
- 2½ cups powdered sugar sifted
- Pinch salt
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Using the whisk attachment of your stand mixer, whip the butter on medium-high speed for 5 minutes, stopping to scrape the bowl once or twice.
- Reduce the speed to low and gradually add the powdered sugar. Once all of the powdered sugar is incorporated, increase the speed to medium-high and add the vanilla, mixing until incorporated. Whip at medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes, scraping the bowl as needed. Frost cake or cupcakes as desired.
Notes
- This recipe yields enough frosting for 12 cupcakes or a 9x13-inch cake; double the amount for larger quantities.
- A stand mixer with a whisk attachment is ideal, but a hand mixer works as well.
- Vanilla bean paste or vanilla bean seeds can substitute for vanilla extract without altering texture.
- Use gel food coloring to tint the frosting without thinning it.
- Favorite piping tips include Ateco #828, #808, and #1 for various designs.
