Vegan Chocolate Crinkle Cookies

Vegan Chocolate Crinkle Cookies offer a rich chocolate flavor with a distinctive cracked powdered sugar exterior. Made without animal products, the dough uses ingredients like cocoa powder, vegetable oil, and applesauce. The dough is chilled to prevent spreading, then rolled heavily in powdered sugar before baking, producing the signature crinkled appearance and a tender, chewy texture inside.

Description

These cookies combine unsweetened cocoa powder with vegetable oil, applesauce, and sugar to create a deep chocolate base that is vegan-friendly. The addition of vanilla extract and warm spices like cinnamon brings subtle complexity. The dry ingredients include all-purpose flour with baking powder and baking soda for leavening, resulting in a light but chewy cookie.

Chilling the dough overnight allows the cookies to set, preventing excessive spreading and supporting the formation of cracks during baking. Each cookie ball is generously rolled in powdered sugar, which contrasts with the dark dough and highlights the cracked surface, a characteristic feature of crinkle cookies.

The baked cookies have a tender center with a crackled sugar crust, ideal as a cocoa-rich treat. They can be served as a snack, dessert, or gift. The recipe notes emphasize using high-quality cocoa and thorough coating in sugar for best results.

Ingredients

Servings
  • cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • ½ cup applesauce
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, add the cocoa powder, sugar, oil, applesauce, and vanilla extract. Whisk for one minute.
  2. In a small bowl, add the flour, cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Mix until fully incorporated.
  3. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight for a minimum of 5 hours.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. and prepare a baking sheet with a silicone mat or parchment paper. Also, put the powdered sugar in a small bowl and set aside.
  5. Scoop 2 tablespoons of dough into your hand and form a ball. Then evenly roll the ball in the powdered sugar until heavily coated. Carefully place it on the baking sheet, making sure the powdered sugar stays on the cookie. Repeat the process until there is no more cookie dough left. If the powdered sugar runs out, add more to your small bowl.
  6. Place cookies on the prepared baking sheet and make sure to leave 2 inches apart.
  7. Bake for 10 minutes.
  8. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and place it on a cooling rack. Allow cookies to slightly cool for 10 minutes. Then, carefully transfer them to the wire rack to fully cool for at least 1 hour.

Notes

  • Use high-quality cocoa powder for a rich chocolate flavor.
  • Chilling the dough for at least 5 hours is essential to prevent spreading and achieve crinkle texture.
  • Coat dough balls thoroughly in powdered sugar to create pronounced crinkle patterns.
  • Optionally roll in granulated sugar before powdered sugar for a more textured top.
