Watermelon Margarita Recipe
Description
This Watermelon Margarita features fresh watermelon juice made by blending seedless watermelon cubes and straining to a smooth liquid. The cocktail mixes watermelon juice with fresh lime juice, silver or blanco tequila, and triple sec, adding agave nectar or simple syrup to taste for sweetness. The shaker is filled with ice to chill and dilute slightly, resulting in a balanced, vibrant drink.
The glasses are rimmed with a chili-salt mixture—either Tajin, kosher salt, or a blend of chili powder and kosher salt for a spicy-salty edge that enhances the watermelon’s sweetness. Garnishes of watermelon wedges and lime slices complement the glass presentation and add fresh aroma.
Simple syrup can be made by dissolving equal parts sugar and water over heat, cooled before use, as an optional sweetener alternative. Chilling the glasses ahead enhances the drinking experience. This margarita is suited for warm weather or festive gatherings.
The recipe advises careful straining of juice for a smooth texture and suggests freezing glasses or rimming them with salt mixtures for added flavor. The balance of tart lime, sweet watermelon, and tequila creates a drink both refreshing and flavorful.
Ingredients
Watermelon Juice
- 3 cups watermelon cubed, seedless
Chili-Salt For the Rims
- kosher salt Tajin or a combination of 1 part chili powder mixed with 1 part Kosher salt, coarse
- lime wedges
Watermelon Margarita
- 8 ounces watermelon juice 1 cup
- 2 ounces lime juice fresh, 1/4 cup
- 4 ounces tequila silver or blanco, 1/2 cup
- 1 ounce triple sec or Grand Marnier
- 1-2 ounces agave nectar optional depending on the sweetness of the watermelon, or simple syrup
Garnish
- watermelon small wedges or slices
- lime small wedges or slices
Instructions
To Make the Watermelon Juice:
- To make the watermelon juice, put the watermelon cubes into a blender. Blend until smooth. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve, pressing on solids.
Prepare the Glasses:
- Chill two margarita glasses in the freezer for 15-30 minutes. Place the salt (Tajin or Chili salt) in a shallow dish or saucer. Wet the rim of the glass with a lime wedge and dip the glass into the salt, coating the top edge.
Make Margaritas:
- In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, pour the watermelon juice, lime juice, tequila, triple sec, and agave nectar or simple syrup (if using). Shake until frothy and well chilled, at least 1 minute. Strain into the prepared glasses and garnish with watermelon wedge or lime slices.
Simple Syrup:
- You can make simple syrup by combining equal parts of water and sugar. Heat over medium heat until the sugar dissolves completely. Cool before using. Simple syrup can also be made in the microwave. Microwave 30 seconds at a time stirring in between each interval. It should take about 2 1/2 to 3 minutes total.
Notes
- Use regular kosher salt or a chili powder and kosher salt blend for rimming glasses to add a spicy touch.
- Chill margarita glasses in the freezer before serving for a cool presentation.
- Simple syrup can be homemade by dissolving sugar in equal parts water over heat and cooling before use.
