White Basmati Rice Recipe

This White Basmati Rice recipe focuses on rinsing the rice until clear to remove excess starch, then cooking it in a rice cooker with a small amount of melted ghee or olive oil and kosher salt. After cooking and resting, the rice is fluffed to separate grains, producing light, fragrant, and fluffy basmati rice with distinct grains.

Description

White Basmati Rice requires thorough rinsing to remove surface starch, which helps prevent clumping during cooking. The rinsed rice is then transferred to a rice cooker, mixed with melted ghee or extra virgin olive oil, and seasoned with kosher salt. The oil evenly coats the grains, promoting separation and a pleasant mouthfeel. Water is added and the surface smoothed before cooking using the rice cooker's standard settings.

Once cooking completes, the rice is allowed to rest for 10 minutes without lifting the lid, enabling moisture to redistribute evenly. Finally, fluffing the rice with a paddle separates the grains for a light and fragrant texture characteristic of basmati rice.

This basic preparation can complement a wide range of dishes, serving as a simple side or base for curries and stir-fries.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 200 g white Basmati rice
  • 12 fl oz water plus more for rinsing
  • ½ fl oz ghee or extra virgin olive oil, melted
  • 3 g kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Measure out all the ingredients.
  2. Pour the rice into a strainer and rinse under running water until the water runs clear.
  3. Transfer the rice into the rice cooker and mix in the melted ghee (or extra virgin olive oil). Use a spoon or spatula to coat every grain.
  4. Sprinkle with salt and mix again.
  5. Pour the water over the rice and flatten out the top of the rice so the rice lays flat.
  6. Follow the instructions for your rice cooker. My rice cooker has a basic “rice” setting that I press and press the “start” button.
  7. After the rice has finished cooking, leave it to rest for 10 minutes without opening the lid.
  8. After 10 minutes, open the lid and fluff with a rice paddle.
