White Texas Sheet Cake Recipe

Report
White Texas Sheet Cake is a moist, tender cake baked in a large rectangular pan, featuring a batter of flour, sugar, sour cream, eggs, butter, and water. Topped with a smooth frosting made by boiling milk and butter then mixing in powdered sugar, vanilla, and optional walnuts, this cake has a creamy, rich layer that complements the soft crumb of the cake beneath.

Description

This sheet cake combines basic baking ingredients with sour cream to produce a tender crumb. The dry ingredients of flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt are mixed with sour cream and eggs, then combined with a hot butter and water mixture to create a thin batter that bakes evenly in a greased and floured large pan. Baking for about 20 to 22 minutes produces a moist but firm cake.

The frosting is prepared by bringing milk and butter to a boil, then removing from heat to incorporate confectioners' sugar and vanilla extract, resulting in a smooth, spreadable icing. Optionally, chopped walnuts can be folded into the frosting to add texture and nutty flavor. The frosting is spread over the cooled cake, giving a creamy topping that contrasts with the soft cake.

White Texas Sheet Cake is well suited for gatherings and can be served in squares. The combination of creamy frosting and moist cake creates a comforting dessert that holds up well for multiple servings. The recipe requires no layer assembly, making it straightforward while producing satisfying results.

Ingredients

Servings
  • Ingredients for cake:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 egg
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup water
  • Ingredients for Frosting:
  • 6 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 4 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup walnut chopped, optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour a 10x15 inch pan.
  2. Combine the flour, sugar, baking soda and salt. Beat in the sour cream and eggs. Set aside. Melt the butter on low in a saucepan and add the water. Bring mixture to a boil then remove from heat. Allow to cool slightly, then stir butter mixture into the egg mixture and mix until well blended.
  3. Pour the batter into prepared pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-22 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool in the pan on a wire rack.  While the cake is cooling, prepare the frosting.
  4. For the frosting: In a large saucepan, combine the milk and 1/2 cup butter. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat. Stir in the confectioners' sugar and vanilla, then fold in the nuts, mixing until blended. Spread frosting over the top of the cake.
  5. Serve and enjoy!
