Wreath Cookies
Description
The cookies begin by melting butter and mini marshmallows together over low heat until smooth. Green food coloring is added to the marshmallow mixture to create a vibrant holiday color. This sticky green mixture is poured over cornflakes and gently mixed to coat all flakes thoroughly.
The coated cornflakes are then formed by hand into ring shapes resembling wreaths, taking care to keep the structure intact using a small hole in the center. Cinnamon candies placed on each wreath add a seasonal garnish resembling holly berries. The cookies are set on parchment paper and allowed to rest at room temperature until firm, about an hour.
These wreath cookies offer a textural contrast between the crispness of the cornflakes and the sweet chewiness of the marshmallow coating. They are easy to prepare without baking and visually fitting for holiday celebrations or festive occasions.
Ingredients
- ½ cup butter unsalted
- 10 ounces miniature marshmallows
- 1 teaspoon green food coloring
- 6 cups cornflakes cereal
- vegetable shortening for hands, brand Crisco
- cinnamon candies for garnish
Instructions
- Pour 6 cups of Cornflakes into a large bowl and set aside.
- Melt a stick of butter in a saucepan, on low heat. When completely melted, add a bag of mini marshmallows. Stir until the marshmallows are completely melted.
- Add a teaspoon of green food coloring. Stir until the mixture is completely green
- Pour the green mixture on the cornflakes. Mix until the cornflakes are completely coated and green.
- Put Crisco on your fingers.
- Place a small handful of the cornflake mixture on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet and form a wreath by making a hole in the center.
- Place three cinnamon drops near each other on the wreath.
- Repeat with the remaining cornflakes mixture. (Every once in awhile, put more Crisco on your fingers)
- Let the wreaths rest on the baking sheet until they are set, about 1 hour.
Notes
- Apply vegetable shortening to your fingers to easily shape the sticky mixture into wreaths without it sticking.
- For faster setting, refrigerate the cookies until firm instead of resting at room temperature.
- Arrange cinnamon candies close together for a clustered holly berry effect or spread them around the wreath as preferred.
