Zebra Popcorn Recipe

Report
Zebra Popcorn is a sweetened popcorn coated in a brown sugar and corn syrup mixture baked to caramelize, then drizzled with melted white and dark chocolate for a contrasting striped effect. The popcorn is evenly coated in a buttery, caramel-like glaze that hardens into a crisp shell, providing a crunchy, sweet base contrasted by the creamy sweetness of chocolates drizzled on top. This treat combines rich caramel flavor with chocolate accents in a playful presentation.

Description

This recipe begins with popping a large quantity of popcorn and spreading it onto baking sheets. A sauce combining melted butter, brown sugar, and light corn syrup is boiled to develop a caramel consistency, then mixed with baking soda and vanilla extract to create a foamy glaze. Pouring this over the popcorn and baking at a low temperature with frequent stirring allows the coating to crisp and evenly coat each piece. Cooling solidifies the crisp caramel shell.

Once cooled, white and dark chocolate chips are melted separately and drizzled over the popcorn to create the characteristic striped zebra pattern, adding a delicate chocolaty sweetness and richness to the caramel-coated popcorn. This snack can be served as an indulgent treat or party snack with a balance of caramel sweetness and chocolate notes.

The popcorn should be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week to maintain its crispness and flavor.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 10 cups Popcorn popped
  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup butter unsalted
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup white chocolate chips
  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil.  You may need 2 baking sheets based on the size that you are using.
  2. In a large saucepan, heat the butter until melted.  Then stir in the brown sugar and corn syrup.  Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring frequently.  Then boil for approximately 5 minutes without stirring.  Remove from heat and stir in the baking soda and vanilla extract.  The mixture will foam up when the baking soda is added.
  3. Place the popped popcorn on the baking sheets and remove any of the unpopped kernels. Pour this mixture over the popcorn and gently toss the popcorn to coat it with the mixture.
  4. Bake the popcorn for 60 minutes, stirring the popcorn every 15 minutes.
  5. Remove the popcorn from the oven and let the popcorn cool.
  6. Place the white chocolate chips and dark chocolate chips in 2 separate microwave safe bowls.  Heat in 30 second intervals, stirring after each interval, until the chocolate is melted.
  7. Add the melted chocolate to 2 separate ziplock bags and cut the corner off of the bag with scissors.  Drizzle both chocolates on top of the popcorn evenly.

Notes

  • Keep Zebra Popcorn stored in an airtight container at room temperature to preserve its texture and flavor for up to one week.
