10-Minute Microwave Asparagus
Description
This recipe shows how to prepare asparagus by washing and trimming ends for fitting into a microwave-safe dish. Starting with adding a tablespoon of water and covering, the asparagus is microwaved on high for about 3 minutes (adjusting time for thickness) until tender-crisp but still firm, resembling an al dente texture.
The optional finishing touches—melted butter, freshly squeezed lemon juice, kosher salt, black pepper, and garlic powder—add a fresh, subtle flavor profile that complements the delicate vegetable. The method suits busy cooks needing a quick vegetable side without oven or stovetop use.
Leftover cooked asparagus can be refrigerated in an airtight container for 3-4 days and also works chopped cold in salads. Peeling the bottom of thick, fibrous asparagus spears is optional after trimming.
Ingredients
- 1 bunch asparagus
Optional ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon butter melted
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice freshly squeezed
- ¼ teaspoon kosher salt Diamond Crystal brand
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
- Wash the asparagus spears. Trim their ends. You can either trim enough of the ends so that the spears fit into your microwave-safe bowl, or, after trimming just the ends, cut them in half (or even chop them).
- Place the trimmed spears in a microwave-safe bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of water.
- Cover with a microwave-safe plate and microwave on high until tender-crisp, about 3 minutes. (See notes).
- Use oven mitts to remove the bowl from the microwave, and be careful when removing the lid - hot steam will escape.
- Transfer the asparagus to a serving plate. Sprinkle it with kosher salt and serve. You can also dress with melted butter, lemon juice, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
Notes
- Trim thick, fibrous ends and optionally peel the bottom of the asparagus spears for tenderness.
- Adjust microwave time if asparagus spears are very thin, starting at 2 minutes then increasing as needed to avoid overcooking.
- Removing the cover requires caution due to escaping hot steam.
- Leftover asparagus keeps in an airtight container refrigerated for 3 to 4 days and can be chopped cold into salads.
