15-Minute Grilled Shrimp
Description
The 15-Minute Grilled Shrimp recipe calls for large shrimp marinated briefly in olive oil and a blend of spices that include smoked paprika and cayenne pepper, enhancing their flavor with a subtle smoky heat. Skewering the shrimp helps them cook evenly over medium-high heat on the grill. The shrimp cook fast, becoming opaque in about three minutes per side, which helps retain moisture and tenderness. Since the shrimp are cooked so quickly, grill marks may not develop, but the spices and grilling impart a satisfying grilled taste.
The finished shrimp can be served immediately as a main dish or as part of a salad or appetizer. Their size and seasoning make them easy to handle and flavorful enough to stand on their own or pair with simple sides.
To avoid overcooking, remove the shrimp as soon as they lose translucency. If using wooden skewers, soak them beforehand to prevent burning. Leftover grilled shrimp store well in the refrigerator for up to three days and reheat gently at low power to maintain tenderness.
Ingredients
- 1 ½ pound Shrimp large, peeled and deveined, raw
- 2 tablespoons olive oil extra-virgin
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt or ¼ teaspoon of any other salt, including Morton kosher salt, Diamond Crystal brand
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
Instructions
- Heat the grill on medium-high.
- Place the shrimp in a large bowl.
- Add the extra-virgin olive oil, kosher salt, black pepper, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and cayenne. Toss to coat.
- Thread the shrimp on six skewers, about 8 shrimp per skewer.
- Grill the shrimp until opaque, about 3 minutes on each side. If using a dual-contact grill, grill them for 5 minutes. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Use large, extra-large, or jumbo shrimp for best grilling results, as smaller shrimp may dry out or be difficult to skewer.
- Remove shrimp from the grill as soon as they turn opaque to avoid overcooking and toughness.
- If using wooden skewers, soak them in water for at least 20 minutes before grilling to prevent burning.
- Leftover shrimp keep in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to three days; reheat gently at 50% microwave power to preserve texture.
