5-Minute Creamy Chipotle Southwest Sauce

This 5-minute creamy chipotle southwest sauce combines chipotle peppers in adobo with sour cream, mayonnaise, and fresh lime juice, blended until smooth along with cilantro, garlic, onion powder, and salt. It offers a smoky, tangy, and mildly spicy flavor perfect as a dip, spread, or sauce for tacos and sandwiches.

Description

The sauce blends chipotle peppers, sour cream, mayonnaise, and cilantro with lime juice, garlic, onion powder, and salt for depth and brightness. Processing the ingredients creates a smooth, creamy consistency. The smoky heat of chipotle peppers is balanced by the creaminess of sour cream and mayo, while fresh lime juice lifts the brightness. Cilantro adds a herbal freshness, which can be omitted if undesired.

The sauce is versatile and can be used as a taco topping, sandwich spread, or dip. It keeps refrigerated up to a week. Adjust seasoning or add more adobo sauce for extra heat.

If a food processor or blender isn't available, chopping the ingredients finely and whisking together achieves a similar texture, though less smooth.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 3 Tablespoons mayonnaise
  • ½ cup cilantro roughly chopped
  • 2 Tablespoons lime juice 1 lime, fresh
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt or to taste, fine sea salt

Instructions

  1. In a mini food processor or blender, add all ingredients and pulse to combine until smooth. Scrape the sides of the bowl as needed. Be sure to taste test and adjust salt if needed (or add more peppers for extra spicy).
  2. Transfer to a jar or another airtight container. Store in the fridge for up to a week and enjoy on tacos, as a dip, spread on sandwiches, and more!

Notes

  • Add extra adobo sauce or 1-2 more chipotle peppers to increase spiciness.
  • Omit cilantro if you dislike its flavor, the sauce will still be tasty.
  • Without a blender, finely chop all ingredients and mix thoroughly for a coarse but flavorful sauce.
  • This recipe makes about 3/4 cup, suitable for multiple servings or uses.
