Adobo Seasoning
Description
This Adobo Seasoning combines garlic powder, salt, black pepper, oregano, and turmeric into a dry blend commonly used in Latin cooking. The oregano used can be Mexican oregano, which has mild licorice and citrus notes distinguishing it from Mediterranean oregano. The ingredients are ground together to a uniform consistency and stored airtight for convenience.
The seasoning provides a balanced savory and mildly earthy flavor profile with notable garlic and herbal notes. It can be used to season meats, vegetables, and stews typical of Latin cuisines.
This mix yields about half a cup or roughly 24 teaspoons, making it easy to incorporate or divide for multiple uses. The choice of oregano affects the flavor, with Mexican oregano preferred here but substitutable by Mediterranean oregano.
Ingredients
- 4 tbsp garlic powder
- 2 1/2 tbsp salt
- 2 tsp black pepper ground
- 2 tsp oregano (See Note 1)
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric ground
Instructions
- In a spice grinder or food processor add the garlic powder, salt, black pepper, oregano, and turmeric. Pulse several times. Store in an airtight container.
Notes
- This recipe yields about half a cup of seasoning, equal to approximately 24 teaspoons.
- For Latin dishes, Mexican oregano is preferred due to its citrus and licorice notes distinct from Mediterranean oregano.
- Both Mexican and Mediterranean oregano can be used based on availability, with Mexican oregano contributing a more pungent flavor.
