Air Fryer Apple Chips
Description
Air Fryer Apple Chips are made from thin slices of apples like Gala, Honeycrisp, Fuji, Pink Lady, or Granny Smith for a tart note, sprinkled with cinnamon and cooked in an air fryer at 300°F. The chips crisp up after cooling and develop a light golden color. Using a metal rack prevents slices from flying within the air fryer. The cooking time varies depending on apple type, slice thickness, and air fryer model, so monitoring the chips to avoid burning is important. Juicier apples take longer to crisp.
The chips have a crunchy texture and a warm cinnamon flavor that balances the natural sweetness and tartness of the apples. They make a convenient snack or a topping for salads and desserts. While best enjoyed fresh for maximum crispness, the chips can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for several days though they will soften over time.
This recipe emphasizes uniform thin slicing, ideally ⅛ inch thick using a mandoline, and spacing or layering with a rack in the air fryer for even airflow and cooking. Cooling on a flat plate allows the chips to harden to the desired crispness.
Ingredients
- 2 apple like Gala, Honeycrisp, Fuji, Pink Lady or Granny Smith (for a more tart flavor, washed
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat air fryer to 300°F.
- Slice the apples into thin slices (about ⅛-inch) thick using a mandoline slicer. If you don't have a mandoline, you can use a knife but try to keep the slices as even as possible.
- Lay the apples on a flat surface and sprinkle with cinnamon.
- Working in batches, place some apple slices in the air fryer basket in a single layer (it's ok if they overlap a little). Place a metal rack/trivet on top of the apples to prevent them from flying around the air fryer.
- Cook the apples 15-18 minutes, stopping to flip them halfway through. Use an oven mitt when taking the metal rack/trivet out as it will be hot.
- Remove the apple chips from the air fryer when they are golden brown. Place them on a plate to cool for several minutes. The chips will crisp up as they cool. Repeat with the remaining apple slices.
- Apple chips are best when eaten fresh the same day. They can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 5 days but will soften over time.
- To Make Apple Chips In The Oven:Preheat oven to 225°F. Arrange the apple slices on baking sheets lined with parchment paper or a silicone liner in a single layer and sprinkle them with cinnamon. Bake in the oven for 1 hour then flip the apples over with a spatula and cook another 1 to 1 ½ hours until they are dried out. Turn the oven off and let the apples cool in the oven for an additional hour. As they cool, they will crisp up.
Notes
- Use a mandoline slicer to cut apples evenly to about ⅛ inch thickness for consistent crisping.
- If your air fryer has a metal rack, placing it over the apple slices helps keep them from moving during cooking.
- Monitor the chips during cooking to remove any slices browning faster than others, preventing burning.
- Allow chips to cool on a flat surface after cooking as they will crisp up substantially as they cool.
- Store apple chips in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days; they may soften but remain tasty.
- Adjust cook time based on apple variety, slice thickness, and air fryer model for best results.
