Air Fryer Avocado Fries

Air Fryer Avocado Fries feature ripe avocado slices breaded with seasoned flour, egg wash, and a seasoned panko mixture before cooking in an air fryer for a crispy outer layer and creamy interior. The coating includes everything bagel seasoning, adding a savory tang to the mild avocado. These fries offer a crunchy texture contrast and flavorful bite as a unique snack or appetizer.

Description

The recipe begins by slicing avocado halves after peeling and pitting, creating approximately half-inch thick wedges. A three-step breading process coats the slices: seasoning flour, egg wash with water, and panko breadcrumbs mixed with everything bagel seasoning. This triple layer ensures the fries crisp well during cooking.

Air frying at 400°F crisps the breaded avocado slices without excess oil and maintains the tender avocado inside. Nonstick spray on the air fryer basket prevents sticking, and spacing the slices ensures even cooking. Variations include baking or deep frying the prepared slices for a different texture and taste.

These avocado fries provide a rich and creamy center balanced by a crunchy, flavorful crust, suitable for serving as a snack, side dish, or appetizer. Their seasoning and breading make them distinctive compared to typical fried avocado dishes.

Serving size estimates about six people, with each getting about half an avocado worth of fries. When baking or frying as alternates, maintaining separation on the trays or in the oil promotes crispiness. Testing oil temperature with breadcrumbs before frying helps achieve ideal coloration and texture.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 medium avocado
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp paprika
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup everything bagel seasoning
  • 2 large egg
  • water splash
  • cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Preheat air fryer to 400°F. Line a plate with wax paper and set aside, near the air fryer.

Slice Avocados

  1. Slice avocados in half, lengthwise, removing the pit. Peel the skin off the avocado and slice each avocado half lengthwise into roughly 1/2" thick slices.

Bread Avocado Slices

  1. Get out 3 shallow bowls. To the first one, add flour, 1/2 tsp black pepper, 1/2 tsp salt, and 1/4 tsp paprika. Stir with a fork until combined.
  2. In the second bowl, add 2 eggs and splash of water and whisk. In the third bowl, add the panko and the everything bagel seasoning. Stir with a fork to combine.
  3. Coat the avocado slices, one at a time, in the flour mixture, then in the eggs, then in the panko mixture. Set aside on a plate and repeat with remaining slices.

Air Fry

  1. Spray basket of air fryer with nonstick spray to prevent any sticking.
  2. Add breaded avocado slices in a single layer to the bottom of the air fryer basket, making sure they're not touching each other. You'll likely have to cook the avocado slices in batches. Lightly spray with a canola oil cooking spray, then cook for 4 minutes.
  3. Open air fryer, turn over avocado slices, spray with cooking spray, then cook for another 2-3 minutes, or until golden and crunchy.
  4. Set cooked avocado fries on a plate and repeat with any remaining avocado slices.

Serve

  1. Serve immediately, served with desired dipping sauce.

Notes

  • The recipe serves about 6, with each serving containing roughly half an avocado's worth of fries.
  • For an alternative to air frying, bake the breaded avocado slices at 425°F for 12-14 minutes, turning once for even crispness.
  • To deep fry, heat a high smoke point oil until breadcrumbs sizzle without burning, then fry avocado slices 2-3 minutes per side until golden.
