Air Fryer Baked Potatoes
Description
This recipe begins by thoroughly scrubbing large russet potatoes and drying them, then poking holes with a fork to allow steam to escape during cooking. The potatoes are brushed lightly with neutral oil and seasoned with kosher salt to enhance flavor and encourage crisp skin. Placing potatoes spaced apart in the air fryer basket ensures thorough air circulation for even cooking.
Cooked at 400°F for about 35 minutes, the potatoes become tender enough that a fork slides easily into the flesh. If they remain firm, additional cooking time is suggested. The air fryer method achieves a baked potato texture without heating a conventional oven and shortens cooking time.
These baked potatoes can be served as a hearty side dish or topped with ingredients like butter, sour cream, cheese, or chives for a customizable meal. Yukon or red potatoes may also be used, although cooking times may vary slightly.
If cooking more than four potatoes, extending the cooking time by up to 15 minutes helps ensure doneness due to reduced air circulation from crowding.
Ingredients
- 4 large russet potato
- 1 tablespoon neutral cooking oil vegetable or canola oil, generic cooking oil
- kosher salt to taste
Instructions
- Scrub potatoes thoroughly with cold water. Pat dry with a paper towel. Using a fork, poke holes all over the potatoes.
- Brush potatoes with oil and sprinkle with kosher salt.
- Place potatoes in the air fryer basket and be sure they are not touching. Air fry at 400 degrees for 35 minutes.
- Potatoes are ready if a fork can slide in easily when poked. If potatoes still feel firm, bake for another 5 minutes.
Notes
- Cooking more than four potatoes requires adding up to 15 extra minutes to cook evenly.
- Yukon gold and red potatoes can be substituted but may need adjustment in cooking time.
- Poking holes in the potatoes with a fork helps steam escape and prevents bursting during cooking.
- Brushing with oil before air frying crisps the skin and adds flavor.
