Air Fryer Banana Chips
Description
The process starts with peeling and slicing bananas or plantains evenly, about 1/4 inch thick, preferably using a mandoline for uniformity. The slices are tossed with freshly squeezed lemon juice to prevent browning, a pinch of salt, optional ground black pepper for subtle heat, and brown sugar if a sweeter chip is desired. Arranged in a single layer in the air fryer basket and lightly sprayed with coconut or olive oil, the chips air fry for about 10 to 12 minutes until they reach a golden color and crisp texture.
The recipe notes caution against overlapping slices to avoid uneven cooking and stresses picking bananas that are ripe but firm to ensure chips crisp well instead of becoming mushy. Slightly thicker slices take longer to crisp while thinner slices cook faster, so monitoring is advised. Once removed, the chips may still feel slightly soft but will firm up as they cool, resulting in a crunchy snack.
These chips offer a healthier alternative to fried snacks with the texture and sweetness of banana chips, plus some flexibility in seasoning to customize flavor.
Ingredients
- 2 banana or plantains, ripe and firm
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar for a sweet version
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice freshly squeezed
- olive oil or coconut oil spray
- Pinch salt
- black pepper optional, ground
Instructions
- Preheat the Ais Fryer to 350 degrees F.
- Peel and uniformly slice the bananas into about 1/4 inch thick chips and place in a large bowl. You can also use a mandoline for this.
- Season with lemon juice, salt, pepper (optional), and brown sugar.
- Arrange the sliced bananas in a single layer in the Air Fryer basket. Spray lightly with coconut oil spray.
- Air fry for 10-12 minutes, or until golden and crispy.
- Repeat with the remaining slices.
Notes
- Slice bananas uniformly, ideally about 1/4 inch thick, using a mandoline or careful knife work to ensure even cooking.
- Arrange banana slices in a single layer in the air fryer without overlapping to get consistent crispness.
- Let chips cool a few minutes after air frying to reach full crispiness as they firm up while cooling.
- Select bananas that are ripe but still firm to prevent mushy chips; overripe bananas will not crisp well.
- Adjust air frying time based on slice thickness, checking often to avoid burning or undercooking.
