Air Fryer Beets
Description
The beets are peeled and cut into evenly sized chunks to ensure uniform cooking. Coated with a small amount of neutral oil such as avocado or olive oil and seasoned with kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper, they are arranged in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Cooking at 380°F for 17-20 minutes with a shake halfway develops a roasted exterior and soft interior. Alternatively, an oven roasting method at 400°F for 35-45 minutes provides a similar result.
The cooked beets offer a balance of earthiness and mellow sweetness intensified by the roasting process. Their tender texture contrasts lightly with the outer edges that develop a subtle crispiness. They can be enjoyed plain or incorporated into salads and other dishes.
This approach to cooking beets is practical for those seeking a simple preparation with enhanced natural flavors without boiling or steaming.
Seasonings can be varied by adding garlic powder, balsamic vinegar, onion powder, cumin, or paprika to customize the flavor according to preference.
Ingredients
- 3 beet
- 3/4 tablespoon neutral cooking oil I use avocado or olive oil, generic cooking oil
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/8 teaspoon black pepper freshly cracked, adjust to taste
Instructions
- Peel the beets and depending on the size cut into 4 or 8 pieces each. Even sized pieces of about half inch thickness.
- Transfer them to a bowl. Add the oil and seasonings. Toss them well, so they are all coated with the seasoning.
Air Fryer Method
- Transfer the seasoned beets to the air fryer basket and spread them in a single layer. Set the air fryer to 380F (cook in batches if needed).
- Air fryer for 17-20 minutes for the perfect texture. Shake the basket half way through.
- Serve and enjoy roasted beets as is or in a salad. Sprinkle some chopped or dried parsley.
Oven Method
- Preheat the oven to 400°F. Transfer the beets to a large sheet pan. You can also add the oil and seasonings on the sheet pan itself.
- Spread evenly so they do not overlap. Cook for about 35-45 minutes. Remove from oven and serve warm.
Notes
- Use evenly sized beet pieces to ensure consistent cooking throughout.
- Basic seasoning with salt, pepper, and neutral oil preserves the beet's natural flavor.
- Experiment with garlic powder, balsamic vinegar, onion powder, cumin, or paprika for varied flavor profiles.
