Air Fryer Blooming Onion

The Air Fryer Blooming Onion transforms a large white onion into a crispy, petal-like appetizer coated in a seasoned flour and egg batter. The onion is sliced to open like a flower, twice coated in a spiced flour and egg wash, then air-fried with olive oil spray to achieve a golden, crunchy texture similar to deep-fried versions with less oil.

Description

This blooming onion starts by trimming and cutting the onion into 12 sections while keeping the root intact so the petals stay connected. After cutting, the onion petals are separated and soaked in cold water if needed to encourage opening, then dried. The coating combines flour with paprika, garlic salt, thyme, and oregano for a flavorful crust.

The onion is dipped in the seasoned flour mixture, then coated with an egg and milk wash, followed by a second flour coating to build up a thick, crispy layer. It is placed on foil in the air fryer, sprayed with olive oil to promote browning and crispiness. The air fryer cooks the onion to a golden-brown crust that has crispy edges yet tender onion inside, with a distinctive floral presentation.

The accompanying dipping sauce blends mayonnaise, sour cream, ketchup, horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, and cayenne pepper for creamy, tangy flavor that complements the savory, spiced onion petals. This appetizer offers a unique presentation and a less greasy alternative to traditional deep frying.

For best results, if the onion does not open naturally, soaking it in cold water for about 10 minutes before breading helps the petals spread evenly. Nutritional information applies per quarter of the onion with dipping sauce.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 large white onion
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • cup milk
  • 2 egg
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon garlic salt
  • 1 teaspoon thyme dried
  • 1 teaspoon oregano dried
  • olive oil spray form

Dipping Sauce

  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 2 teaspoons horseradish sauce creamy
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper

Instructions

  1. Peel the onion and cut off the top, leaving the root intact. Place top of the onion down on a cutting board. Starting 1/2-inch from the root, cut the onion into quarters slicing down toward the cutting board. Then cut each quarter into 3 equal pieces for a total of 12 sections. (see note)
  2. In a medium bowl, stir together flour, paprika, garlic salt, thyme, and oregano. Place the onion into the flour. Use a spoon to make sure to distribute flour mixture and make sure all petals are coated. Shake off any excess flour.
  3. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk milk and eggs together. Coat entire onion in egg mixture. The mixture will be sticky. Then place the onion back into the flour mixture and spoon it all over the onion until coated.
  4. Place a piece of oil into the bottom of your basket of your air fryer. Set the breaded onion on top of the foil and then spray the onion with olive oil spray. This will give the onion a deep-fried texture. Loosely place another piece of foil over the onion to help prevent the tips from burning.
  5. Cook at 340 degrees F for 10 minutes. Spray the onion with more olive oil spray. Cook at 360 degrees F for 10-12 minutes. Remove the foil over the onion and cook for another 3-5 minutes depending on how browned you like it.
  6. While the onion is cooking, make the blossom sauce. Add the mayo, sour cream, ketchup, creamy horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, and cayenne to a small bowl and whisk to combine.
  7. Once the onion is done cooking, transfer it to a large, shallow bowl. Carefully take out the middle of the onion (keep this for snacking!) and place the ramekin of sauce in the center. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Soak the sliced onion in cold water for 10 minutes if it does not open naturally to separate petals.
  • Shake the onion dry thoroughly before breading to ensure coatings adhere well.
  • Nutritional data is based on one-quarter of the blooming onion served with two tablespoons of dipping sauce.
