Air Fryer Buffalo Cauliflower
Description
The recipe calls for small to medium cauliflower florets coated in a batter composed of all-purpose flour, water, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. These coated florets air fry at 400°F to achieve a crunchy exterior. After the initial cook, the florets are tossed in buffalo wing sauce and returned to the air fryer for additional crisping. This method ensures the buffalo coating adheres well and intensifies the flavor.
The result is cauliflower that is crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and coated with a spicy, tangy buffalo sauce similar to traditional buffalo wings. The use of an air fryer reduces the oil needed, creating a less greasy and lighter textured snack.
Serve these buffalo cauliflower wings with classic accompaniments such as ranch or blue cheese dipping sauces and celery or carrot sticks. They make a flavorful appetizer or snack option, especially for those seeking a plant-based alternative to buffalo wings.
This recipe stores well in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, and reheating in the air fryer restores crispness. Those without an air fryer can consider baking for a similar texture, though the crispiness might be less pronounced.
Ingredients
- 1 large head cauliflower chopped into small-to-medium sized florets (about 4 cups)
- ½ cup all-purpose flour gluten free 1:1 flour will work too
- ½ cup water
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon salt plus more to taste, sea salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ cup buffalo wing sauce I used Tessemae’s Buffalo sauce
Instructions
- Wash and chop cauliflower into 1-inch florets. Try to make all the florets about the same size so that they cook evenly. Pat dry.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, water, garlic powder, paprika, salt and pepper. Add cauliflower florets and toss to coat.
- Preheat air fryer if required. Add coated cauliflower to air fryer basket in a single layer and cook on 400°F until crisp, about 10 minutes, flipping halfway. You might need to cook in batches depending on how big your air fryer basket is.
- Remove cauliflower florets from air fryer and add them back into the same large mixing bowl. Pour buffalo sauce over the cauliflower and toss to coat.
- Add cauliflower back to air fryer in a single layer and cook for another 5-7 minutes, until crisp, checking at the 5 minute mark.
- Serve cauliflower wings with dipping sauce of choice (I prefer ranch or blue cheese) with a side of celery and/or carrot sticks.
Notes
- After cooking, store cooled buffalo cauliflower in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
- Reheat in the air fryer to restore crispiness before serving.
- If you don't have an air fryer, consider baking to achieve a similar texture.
