Air Fryer Carrot Fries [Oil Free]

These oil-free carrot fries are seasoned with tapioca starch and spices, then cooked crispy in an air fryer or oven. The carrots are cut into even sticks and coated to mimic the texture of fried fries without oil. The seasoning includes garlic powder, onion powder, and optional thyme and vegan Parmesan, lending savory notes. The result is a crunchy vegetable side or snack that can be paired with dipping sauces like vegan honey mustard or sriracha mayo.

Description

Air Fryer Carrot Fries use fresh carrots cut into uniform sticks, coated with tapioca starch and a blend of seasoning including salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and optional thyme. The starch helps create a crispy exterior during cooking. The fries can be cooked either in an air fryer at 400°F for about 15-20 minutes or baked in a 450°F oven with a similar timing and seasoning process, including a vegan Parmesan topping added midway in the oven method.

The texture is crispy on the outside with tender carrot inside, emulating traditional fries without oil. The combination of spices and optional vegan Parmesan offers a mildly savory, aromatic flavor that complements the natural sweetness of carrots. The fries can be served with dips like honey mustard or spicy mayo, providing variety for different tastes.

Uniform cutting of carrots is important to ensure even cooking and consistent crispness. These fries offer a vegetable-based alternative to fried potato fries, with less fat and a sweet undertone. They make for a healthy snack or side dish alongside main courses.

They can be prepared a day ahead with seasoning and refrigerated before cooking. Tapioca starch can be swapped for cornstarch if needed. Leftovers keep well refrigerated for up to three days but taste best fresh out of the oven or fryer.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 pound carrot approx. 3 medium/large carrots
  • 1 tablespoon tapioca starch also known as tapioca flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon thyme optional, dried
  • 1-2 tablespoons vegan parmesan cheese optional

Dip for serving (optional)

  • honey mustard vegan
  • mayonnaise with sriracha

Instructions

  1. Peel and chop your carrots into 4 inch sticks, approx ¼ inch thick for even cooking.

Air Frying Instructions

  1. Place the carrot fries and all remaining ingredients in a medium mixing bowl and mix until evenly coated and then arrange them in your basket in an even layer. (They can be overlapping.)
  2. Air fry at 400 degrees F (204 degrees C) for 15-20 minutes, until desired crispiness is reached, mixing once at the halfway point.

Oven Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 450 degrees F (232 degrees C) and line a large baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. Add the tapioca starch, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and thyme to the bowl and mix until all the carrots are evenly coated. Then spread the carrots in a single layer on your prepared tray, leaving space in between each one, so that none are overlapping.
  3. Bake for 20 minutes, then remove the tray from the oven, flip the carrot fries and sprinkle with the vegan Parmesan cheese. Return to the oven for another 10 minutes, or until desired crispiness is reached.
