Air Fryer Cauliflower
Description
Air Fryer Cauliflower transforms cauliflower florets into crispy, flavorful wings using a batter of whole-wheat flour, spices like coriander and cumin, and plant-based milk, followed by breading with fine bread crumbs. Air frying at 180°C crisps the coating evenly while keeping the interior tender. The accompanying sriracha mayo sauce combines vegan mayonnaise, sriracha, and fresh lime juice, creating a creamy, slightly spicy dip that complements the roasted flavors. This method avoids excess oil, producing a lighter alternative to deep-fried versions.
The cauliflower wings work well as a snack or appetizer. The spiced batter and bread crumbs create a textured crust that browns attractively in the air fryer, offering a pleasant contrast to the soft vegetable inside. The lime juice in the sriracha mayo adds brightness that cuts through the richness of the coating.
For preparation convenience, the batter-coated florets can be pre-breaded and refrigerated until ready to cook. For alternative cooking methods, baking at 200°C yields a similarly crispy finish, while deep frying requires about 5-6 minutes per side. These options give flexibility depending on kitchen equipment and desired texture.
Ingredients
Crunchy Cauliflower Wings
- ½ cauliflower head, around 500 g
- 1 cup whole-wheat flour or regular flour
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- Pinch salt
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin powder
- ¾ cup plant-based milk unsweetened
- 2 cups bread crumbs fine
Sriracha Mayo
- 4 tablespoon vegan mayonnaise
- 1 ½ tablespoon sriracha
- lime juice of 1/2 lime
Instructions
- Add the flour, spices, and plant-based milk to a big bowl. Combine well until you have a perfectly smooth batter with no lumps.
- If you find the batter too thick, you can add some more plant-based milk or water.
- Break the cauliflower into florets, add to the batter, mix well, and ensure they are all completely coated.
- Add the bread crumbs to a bowl and using your hands, bread each floret by dipping it into the breadcrumbs and place on a plate or directly to the air-fryer basket.
- To air-fry the cauliflower, you may need to make two batches depending on your air-fryer size and the cauliflower you are using. Using a cooking brush, add some oil to the florets.
- Set the air-fryer to 180C (350F), add the breaded florets into the air fryer basket, and air-fry for 18 minutes. If you are adding a second batch, you can reduce the time to 16 minutes as the air-fryer will already be hot.
Sriracha Mayo
- Combine the vegan mayo, sriracha sauce, and lime juice in a medium-sized bowl.
- Add some chopped green onions and serve on the side of the cauliflower bites.
Notes
- You can bread the cauliflower florets ahead of time and refrigerate them to cook just before serving.
- For baking, roast at 200°C (400°F) for about 15 minutes, then flip and bake 10-12 minutes until golden.
- Deep-fry by cooking florets in medium-high oil for 5-6 minutes on each side until golden brown and evenly cooked.
