Air Fryer Chick-Fil-A Chicken Sandwich Recipe
Description
The chicken is marinated in dill pickle juice for up to two hours to impart moisture and subtle tang. It is then dredged through a seasoned flour blend containing paprika, cayenne, and garlic and onion powders for spice and aroma. After resting to set the coating, the chicken cutlets are air fried at a moderate temperature until reaching a safe internal temperature of 165°F, producing a crisp coating without frying in oil.
The sandwich is assembled on toasted buns, layered with dill pickle slices, fresh tomato, and lettuce. Variations include adding American or Pepper Jack cheese slices and adjusting cayenne pepper for heat. Olive oil spray is used to help crisp the breading during air frying while avoiding damage to the air fryer basket by steering clear of commercial aerosol sprays.
Proper spacing in the air fryer basket allows even cooking and crispness. The recipe offers a homemade alternative that captures the flavor and texture of the iconic chicken sandwich with home appliances.
Ingredients
- 2 chicken breast boneless, cutlets
- 1 cup dill pickle juice
- 1 Tablespoon paprika
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper optional *for a spicy sandwich
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- ½ cup flour
- ½ cup milk
- 1 egg
Sandwich
- 2 Buns
- 2 lices American cheese
- 2 tomato slices
- 4 dill pickles sliced
- lettuce
Instructions
- Put 1 cup of pickle juice in a zippered bag. Add the cutlets and let them marinate, refrigerated, for 30 minutes to 2 hours.
- Take the chicken out and pat it dry.
- Mix the paprika, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt, and flour in a bowl.
- In another shallow bowl, combine the milk and egg.
- Dip the cutlets in the egg mixture. Let any excess drip off.
- Then dip it in the flour mixture. Make sure the pieces are well coated and shake off any excess flour. Put the pieces of chicken on a rack and let it rest for 5-10 minutes.
- While it sits, preheat the air fryer at 360 °F for 5 minutes.
- Spray the air fryer basket and the chicken with some olive oil spray.
- Air fry at 360 °F for 6 minutes. Flip the chicken over and air fry it for another 6 minutes.
- While the chicken cooks, slice the tomatoes and get the rest of the sandwich toppings ready.
- Use a meat thermometer to ensure that the chicken has reached 165 °F internally. If not, continue to cook it until it is done.
- Leave it in the air fryer and add one or two slices of American cheese on top when it is done. Close the air fryer for 1-2 minutes to let the cheese melt.
- Spread the spicy mayonnaise on the roll. Then top it with lettuce, chicken with cheese, dill pickles, and tomato. Or use one of the sandwich variations below.
Notes
- Marinate chicken in pickle juice no longer than 2 hours to avoid overly soft texture.
- Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket to ensure even cooking and crisping.
- Avoid commercial aerosol cooking sprays to prevent damage to the air fryer basket; use olive oil spray instead.
- For classic style, add two dill pickle slices and serve on a toasted bun.
- Deluxe option: melt American cheese on chicken and add tomato and lettuce on a toasted bun.
- Spicy variations include cayenne in flour mixture and Pepper Jack cheese for extra heat.
