Air-Fryer Chickpeas

These Air-Fryer Chickpeas are prepared by drying canned chickpeas, then tossing them with olive oil and your choice of seasoning such as smoked paprika, chili powder, or garlic powder. Air frying at 400°F crisps the chickpeas evenly and creates a crunchy snack or salad topping. The recipe allows seasoning adjustments and optional salt addition for a fully customized flavor.

Description

The recipe starts with canned chickpeas that are thoroughly rinsed, drained, and patted dry to remove moisture, which is essential for crisping in the air fryer. Tossing the chickpeas with a small amount of olive oil helps the seasoning adhere and promotes even crisping. After air frying at 400°F, the chickpeas become crunchy with a satisfying texture and can be shaken mid-cook for uniform crispness.

Seasonings are applied after the initial cook, allowing the flavor to coat each chickpea well without burning. These chickpeas are versatile as a savory snack or a crunchy addition to salads or bowls. The recipe’s simplicity showcases the chickpeas’ texture enhanced by the air fryer’s hot circulation.

Adjusting cook time by a few minutes allows you to reach desired crispness without drying them out. Salt is optional and can be added or omitted based on preference. Serve warm for best texture.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 chickpeas 15-ounce can
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil divided
  • 1/2 tablespoon your choice of seasoning e.g., smoked paprika, chili powder, garlic powder
  • salt to taste (optional)

Instructions

  1. Drain the chickpeas and rinse thoroughly. Pat the chickpeas dry using paper towels or a clean kitchen towel.
  2. Toss the dried chickpeas with 2 teaspoons of olive oil in a mixing bowl.
  3. Preheat your air fryer to 400ºF. If your model lacks a preheat setting, simply let it run for 3 minutes at the same temperature to warm up.
  4. Place the chickpeas in the air-fryer basket, spreading them out in a single layer.
  5. Air fry the chickpeas for 5 minutes, then shake the basket. Continue air frying for another 5 minutes and shake again. Add another 2-3 minutes if your chickpeas are not crispy enough.
  6. Once done, transfer the chickpeas back to the mixing bowl. Drizzle with the remaining 1 teaspoon of olive oil and sprinkle your seasoning blend over the chickpeas (I also sometimes add salt!). Toss to coat evenly.
  7. Serve warm as a snack or a salad topping.
