Air Fryer Cinnamon Apple Chips
Description
This recipe creates cinnamon apple chips by slicing a large red delicious apple into very thin 1/8-inch slices, removing seeds. A blend of granulated sugar and ground cinnamon is sprinkled evenly on both sides. The air fryer basket is lightly sprayed with cooking spray to prevent sticking, and slices are arranged mostly single-layered to ensure even air flow. The air fryer is set to 300°F and the apple slices cook for about 15 minutes, being tossed every 5 minutes or more often near the end to promote even cooking and browning.
After air frying, the apple chips are transferred to a cooling rack, where they continue to crisp further as they cool, achieving a delicate crunch. Serving immediately maintains the best texture and flavor. This method provides a healthier alternative to fried snack foods with a natural sweetness and a warm cinnamon aroma.
For larger batches, cooking in smaller batches is recommended to avoid overcrowding and prevent limp chips. If chips fly around due to air circulation, placing a metal rack over them can keep them in place. An oven alternative involves slow baking at low temperatures for one to two and a half hours, flipping midway, then allowing the chips to cool gradually in the off oven for additional crisping.
Ingredients
- 1 large apple red delicious variety
- 1 Tbsp granulated sugar
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- cooking spray
Instructions
- Evenly slice apple into 1/8th inch thick slices. Remove any seeds. Place in a single layer on a flat surface. Set aside.
- In a small bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon.
- Sprinkle apple slices with cinnamon sugar mixture on both sides. Lightly spray air fryer basket.
- Add slices in air fryer basket, trying not to pile them on top of each other too much.
- Set air fryer to 300°F. Air fry for 15 minutes, tossing apple slices every 5 minutes (and more often towards the end of the cooking time), until golden brown and almost crispy.
- Set apple chips on a cooling rack to cool completely. Chips will continue to crisp up even more as they cool.
- Serve immediately.
Notes
- When making more than one apple's worth, cook chips in batches to prevent overcrowding and ensure crispiness.
- If chips shift too much in the air fryer, place a metal rack on top to keep them stable during cooking.
- As an alternative, bake sliced apples at 200°F for 1 to 1½ hours on each side, then turn off the oven and let chips cool inside to finish crisping.
