Air Fryer Falafel

This air fryer falafel recipe uses a blend of toasted spices, chickpeas, fresh herbs, and chickpea flour to form a paste that is shaped into patties and cooked crisp in the air fryer. The spice toast step enhances fragrance, while chilling the mixture allows flavors to develop and helps the falafel hold together. The result is a gluten-free chickpea patty with herbaceous, spiced flavor and crisp edges achieved without deep frying.

Description

To make Air Fryer Falafel, cumin, coriander, and cardamom are toasted to unlock aroma before adding drained, dried chickpeas with onion, parsley, cilantro, lemon juice, garlic, salt, cayenne, chickpea flour, and baking powder. The mixture is processed to a coarse paste and chilled, which helps flavor meld and improves texture for shaping.

The falafel balls are pressed into patties just under half an inch thick and air fried at 350°F for a crisp exterior without oil soaking. This method reduces fat content compared to traditional frying with a reliable golden crust while keeping the inside tender.

This recipe is suitable for those wanting a flavorful, healthier falafel option with vibrant herbs and spices. The seasoning and herbs provide characteristic Middle Eastern notes, and the air fryer technique offers convenience and ease.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 teaspoon cumin ground
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1 can chickpeas (14 oz)
  • 1/2 cup onion roughly chopped
  • 1/2 cup parsley lightly packed, fresh
  • 1/2 cup cilantro lightly packed, fresh
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice freshly squeezed
  • 1/2 tablespoon garlic minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 cup chickpea flour
  • 1/2 tablespoon baking powder

Instructions

  1. Place the cumin, coriander, and cardamom in a dry skillet set on medium heat. Cook, stirring constantly, until the spices become fragrant, about 1 minute. Place into a large food processor.
  2. Drain and rinse the chickpeas well. Place between 2 layers of paper towel and dry off well. Remove any loose skins, but you don’t need to be too meticulous about it. Transfer into the food processor.
  3. Add all the remaining ingredients except the chickpea flour and baking powder. Process until broken down and paste-like, but a few small lumps remain, stopping to scrape down the sides of the bowl occasionally.
  4. Transfer to a bowl and stir in the flour and baking powder. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to develop the flavors.
  5. Preheat your air fryer to 350°F. Form the falafel into 10 balls (each approximately 2 tablespoons) then press out to just under 1/2-inch thick.
  6. Spray the mesh basket of your air fryer with cooking spray and place the falafel inside, leaving some space between each piece. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook them in 2 batches. Spray the tops of the falafel with oil spray and bake until the tops start to lightly brown, about 9 to 10 minutes. Using a spatula, gently flip and cook the other side for another 9 to 10 minutes or until golden brown.
  7. Serve and enjoy!
