Air Fryer Fish & Chips
Description
This recipe uses an air fryer to achieve the crispy textures of traditional fish and chips without deep frying. Potatoes are cut into uniform fries, soaked to remove excess starch, then dried to enhance crispiness before being coated with oil and salt. The fries cook at high heat with shaking for even crisping.
The fish is coated using a wet-dry-wet-dry method: dipped in an egg and buttermilk mixture, then in pancake mix, back in the egg mixture, and finally panko bread crumbs seasoned with paprika, Old Bay, and salts. This creates a thick, crunchy coating after air frying at 390°F for about 12 minutes until fish is flaky.
After fish cooking, fries are reheated briefly in the air fryer to serve warm together. This dish replicates the taste and texture of classic fish and chips in an approachable, less oily way making it suitable for those avoiding deep frying.
Check fish doneness depending on fillet thickness and keep fries batches small for even cooking. Using fully thawed fish ensures crisp coating. Store leftovers properly or reheat in the air fryer to maintain texture.
Ingredients
Chips
- 2 russet potato
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- ½ teaspoon seasoned salt
Fish
- 1 ½ pounds cod or other white fish, fillets
- 1 cup pancake mix dry
- ½ cup buttermilk
- 1 egg
- 1 cup panko bread crumbs
- ½ teaspoon seasoned salt
- ½ teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
- ½ teaspoon salt each
- ½ teaspoon black pepper each
- ½ teaspoon paprika
Instructions
Chips
- Scrub potatoes and cut into ¼-inch fries.
- Place fries in a large bowl of cold water and soak for 30 minutes. Drain well and dab dry.
- Toss fries with oil and salt.
- Preheat the air fryer to 390°F.
- Place the potatoes in the basket and cook for 10 minutes. Shake the potatoes and cook an additional 6-8 minutes or until crisp. Remove from the air fryer and place on a plate.
Fish
- While fries are cooking, prepare fish. Place pancake mix in a shallow bowl.
- Combine buttermilk and egg in a second bowl and combine bread crumbs and seasonings in a third bowl.
- Dab fish dry with a paper towel. Dip in egg mixture and then into pancake mixture.
- Dip back into the egg mixture and then into the bread crumbs. Spray generously with cooking spray.
- Once the fries are removed, add fish to the air fryer and cook at 390°F for 12 minutes or until cooked through and flaky. Do not overcook.
- Add fries back to the air fryer and cook 1-2 minutes to heat through.
Notes
- Make sure fish fillets are fully thawed before breading to achieve a crisp coating.
- Cooking times may vary by thickness of fish and fries; check earlier and extend time if needed.
- Cook fries in batches for better evenness and crispness.
- To reheat leftovers, return fries to the air fryer at 390°F for 2-3 minutes to restore crisp texture.
- Adjust fry thickness to balance cooking time and crispness.
