Air Fryer Fish & Chips Recipe

This recipe shows how to make a classic fish and chips meal using an air fryer for both fries and breaded white fish fillets. It uses panko breadcrumbs seasoned with paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper for a crispy coating. The fish is dredged in seasoned flour, dipped in egg, then coated thoroughly before air frying. The fries can be homemade or frozen, cooked first to a crisp, then kept warm while the fish cooks. The method yields a lighter, less greasy version of fish and chips with a golden crust and tender fish inside.

Description

The Air Fryer Fish & Chips Recipe combines crispy air-fried French fries and breaded white fish fillets like haddock or cod. Frozen fries or homemade fries are cooked first at 400°F in the air fryer until crisp. Meanwhile, the fish is prepared by cutting into serving-sized pieces, coating each in a seasoned flour mix, then dipped in beaten egg, and finally coated with panko breadcrumbs seasoned with paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. The breaded fish is then cooked in the air fryer, allowing the coating to crisp up while keeping the fish moist inside.

This method produces a crunchy coating thanks to the panko and seasoning, with the fish remaining tender and flavorful. Using the air fryer reduces oil usage compared to traditional deep-frying, resulting in a less greasy meal with a similar textural appeal.

The dish is served hot, with fries kept warm in a low oven while the fish cooks for best texture. Thawing frozen fish before breading is advised to ensure better coating adherence. Preheating the air fryer is recommended for even cooking. This recipe is suitable for a casual dinner with classic flavors and textures of fish and chips but with reduced fat.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 16 ounces French Fries or your favorite homemade air fryer fries, frozen
  • 1 pounds fish fillets haddock, cod, pollock, flounder or other white fish
  • 1 cup panko bread crumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Make the French fries first. Use the air fryer to heat frozen French fries at 400 degrees F for 15 minutes, shaking once. Or make homemade air fryer fries.
  2. While the fries cook preheat the oven to 250 degrees F and prepare the rest of the ingredients.
  3. Get three bowls for breading. In one bowl put the bread crumbs. In the second bowl put the egg and stir it to mix it. In the third bowl add the flour along with the paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper and stir to mix.
  4. Cut the fish fillet into serving size pieces. You can also cut it into fish stick pieces if you prefer.
  5. Pat the fish dry with a paper towel. Then dip it into the bowl with the flour mixture.
  6. Shake off any excess flour and dip in egg mixture, coating it thoroughly.
  7. Finally dip it into the breadcrumbs and coat it completely in bread crumbs.
  8. Set the piece aside to rest and repeat with the remaining pieces.
  9. Once the fries are done cooking place them on a tray and put them in the 250 degree oven. This will keep them warm.
  10. Use a mister spray bottle to spray the bread crumb covered pieces with a little bit of oil. If you don't have a spray bottle brush some oil on with a pastry brush.
  11. Place the coated fillets in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Cook at 400 degrees F for 10 minutes.
  12. After 6 minutes open the air fryer and carefully flip each piece over. Continue to cook until it flakes easily with a fork or reaches a temperature of 145 degrees F. Total cooking time will be around 10-12 minutes.
  13. Serve with the French fries along with lemon and tartar sauce.

Notes

  • Thaw frozen fish fillets prior to breading to ensure coating sticks properly and cooks evenly.
  • If not cooking fries in the air fryer, preheat the air fryer for 3 minutes at 400°F before cooking fish for best results.
