Air Fryer French Fries

Air Fryer French Fries start with unpeeled russet potatoes cut into evenly sized sticks, soaked in cold water to remove excess starch, then dried thoroughly. Tossed with olive oil and seasoning salt, they are cooked in the air fryer until crispy and golden brown. This method results in fries with a crunchy exterior and tender interior, making a classic side dish without deep frying.

Description

This Air Fryer French Fries recipe utilizes whole russet potatoes washed but unpeeled, sliced into uniform sticks to ensure even cooking. The potato sticks soak in cold water for 30 minutes to reduce starch, improving crispness when cooked. After draining and drying with paper towels, the fries are tossed with olive oil and seasoning salt, or alternatively with salt and black pepper. The fries are arranged in a single even layer in the air fryer basket to allow hot air circulation and cooked at 375°F for 10-15 minutes, checked at 10 minutes to avoid overcooking.

The result is golden, crispy fries with a tender interior that replicate the texture of fried potatoes but require less oil and cleanup. Using the air fryer allows for a healthier preparation method with a similar texture to traditional frying. Soaking and drying the potatoes beforehand are key steps for achieving crispiness. The seasoning salt is suggested as a flavor enhancer, contributing to a balanced savory taste.

Serve the fries immediately after cooking to maintain their crisp texture. They can be paired with a variety of dips or enjoyed as a side to sandwiches, burgers, or main courses. Parchment paper lining can help keep serving dishes neat and facilitate cleanup.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 large russet potatoes washed. but not peeled, large
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • seasoning salt to taste
  • salt to taste, sea salt
  • black pepper to taste, sea salt

Instructions

  1. Using a knife or a French fry slicer, slice the potatoes into evenly sized potatoes stick for fries. It works the best when they are all close in size to each other.
  2. Line a basket or plate with parchment paper.
  3. Place the potato sticks into a bowl of cold water and completely cover with water. Soak in the water for 30 minutes.
  4. If needed, preheat your air fryer to 375° (not all models require preheating)
  5. Drain the potato sticks and lay out on paper towels. Blot them dry with more paper towels.
  6. Place in a medium sized bowl and toss with olive oil and seasoning salt. (or salt and pepper but seasoning salt is my secret weapon for amazing friers!)
  7. Place the fries in the bottom of your air fryer basket in one even layer.
  8. Cook for 10-15 minutes until the fries are crispy and golden brown - start checking at the 10-minutemark then watch them closely until they are cooked to your preference.
  9. Remove and shake the fries into the parchment lined dish. (parchment helps keep them crispy, nothing absorbs the oil or makes the fries soggy like paper towels do)
  10. Serve and enjoy!
