Air Fryer French Toast
Description
The bread is soaked briefly in a mixture of eggs, milk (or half and half), vanilla extract, sugar, and cinnamon, enough to coat without becoming soggy. By air frying at 380°F and flipping halfway through, the bread develops a golden crust while maintaining a soft, custard-like center. Using parchment paper lightly sprayed with cooking spray prevents sticking and aids cleanup.
Serving suggestions include maple syrup, berry compotes, or powdered sugar for added sweetness and variety. The method is scalable for single or multiple servings by adjusting egg and milk proportions accordingly.
For batch cooking, soak bread just before air frying to avoid sogginess. Avoid wax paper and do not line the basket during preheating. Spraying parchment on both sides helps it stay in place under the bread slices.
Ingredients
- 2 egg large
- ⅓ cup milk substitute half and half
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
- 4 lices bread thickly sliced brioche, or similar
- 1 teaspoon cooking oil spray
Instructions
- Preheat your air fryer to 380°F.
- Combine eggs, milk, vanilla extract, sugar, and cinnamon in a large but shallow mixing bowl. Whisk well until all the ingredients are combined. Set aside.
- Set up an assembly line with bread slices, egg custard mixture, and air fryer basket or tray. Line your air fryer basket or tray with parchment paper.
- Take one slice of bread, dip into the egg mixture. Let it soak 3-4 seconds on each side. Let the excess drip back out in the bowl and gently place on to the air fryer basket or tray, in a single layer, without touching each other. Then spray a coating of cooking spray on top of the slices.
- Bake at 380°F for 5 minutes, flip, and air fry other side at 380°F again for 3-4 minutes. Actual time might vary based on the air fryer model. So, watch for a nice golden brown color on both sides before you're done.
- Serve your air fryer French toast with some maple syrup, a delicious berry compote, and/or some powdered sugar to your liking.
Notes
- Soak bread slices only when ready to air fry to prevent sogginess if cooking in batches.
- Use parchment paper sprayed lightly with cooking spray on both sides to prevent sticking in the air fryer basket.
- Scale recipe ingredients up or down to match number of servings, adjusting eggs and milk accordingly.
- Avoid using wax paper and do not line the air fryer basket with parchment while preheating.
