Air Fryer French Toast
Description
The recipe starts by slicing day-old French bread into thick slices, which are dipped on all sides in an egg, milk, cinnamon, and vanilla batter. Coating the crusts ensures even flavor and texture. The slices are cooked in a preheated air fryer basket lined with parchment and lightly oiled to prevent sticking. After about eight minutes cooking on one side and an additional five minutes after flipping, the French toast develops a golden, slightly crisp outside while retaining a tender inside.
This air fryer method offers a hands-off approach that produces French toast without the need for frying in a pan of butter or oil, cutting down on mess and enhancing convenience. The texture results in a balance of crusty edges and moist centers. Serve immediately with syrup, powdered sugar, or fruit.
Cooking in batches is recommended if your air fryer basket is small, and slices can be kept warm in a low oven during this time for serving all at once.
Ingredients
- 1 French bread day old, or other crusty bread, loaf
- 4 egg large
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
Instructions
- Slice the loaf of French bread into thick slices, about 1 1/2 - 2 inches.
- Whisk the eggs, milk, cinnamon and vanilla in a large, shallow container until they are well combined.
- Preheat the air fryer to 375 degrees F for 3 minutes.
- Line the air fryer basket with parchment paper and spray or brush with a little cooking oil.
- Dip the French bread slices into the batter and let soak on each side for 10-20 seconds. Roll the slices on their sides so the crusts get coated too.
- Place the French toast slices in the prepared air fryer basket. They should not be touching. You may need to work in batches, depending on the size of your air fryer.
- Cook at 375 degrees F for 8 minutes, then flip them over and cook for another 5 minutes.
- Serve immediately topped with powdered sugar, fresh berries, maple syrup or cinnamon sugar.
Notes
- Keep cooked slices warm in a 250°F oven if preparing in multiple batches for consistent serving temperature.
- For a richer custard flavor, extra eggs or egg yolks may be added to the batter.
