Air Fryer French Toast Sticks
Description
Slices of Texas toast are cut into sticks and lightly dipped in a mixture of eggs, heavy cream, and vanilla extract, avoiding over-soaking to keep the bread from becoming soggy. The sticks are placed in a single layer in an air fryer basket, preventing crowding to ensure even crisping, and cooked at 360°F for about 7 to 9 minutes, flipping midway. After cooking, the sticks are dipped in melted butter and rolled in a cinnamon sugar blend to coat evenly.
This method produces French toast sticks with a golden crust and moist center. The cinnamon sugar topping adds a sweet, warm spice layer. Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to three days or frozen; reheating can be done in an air fryer, oven, or microwave without losing much texture.
Using a serrated knife to cut the bread helps preserve stick shape without compressing it. If preferred, skipping the cinnamon sugar yields a classic French toast flavor.
Ingredients
French Toast Sticks
- 8 lices Texas toast preferably stale
- 4 egg
- ¾ cup heavy cream
- 1 Tablespoon vanilla extract
- 4 Tablespoons butter melted
Cinnamon Sugar
- ⅓ cup sugar
- 2 teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
- Cut each slice of bread into three sticks, set aside.
- In a large bowl or pie plate whisk together the eggs, heavy cream and vanilla extract.
- Combine the cinnamon sugar mixture on a plate and set aside.
- Lightly coat the basket of air fryer with nonstick cooking spray.
- Roll the sticks in the egg mixture quickly (you don’t want it to soak in), shake off excess and place in the pan. Cook in multiple batches.
- Place French toast sticks in the basket, in a single layer, making sure they do not touch each other. You’ll need to cook them in batches. Set the air fryer to 360° and cook 6 minutes, flip, and cook for an additional 1-3 minutes, watching closely, or until golden brown.
- Place butter in a microwave safe bowl and melt.
- Remove sticks from the basket, dip in butter then roll in the cinnamon sugar mixture.
- Repeat the process with remaining bread.
- To keep the cooked French Toast Sticks warm while making another batch simply place them in a single layer on a baking sheet and then put them in a warm oven (175 - 200 degrees F). It will keep them warm and crispy until you are done cooking all of the French toast.
- Serve with warm maple syrup, berries and whipped cream if desired.
Notes
- Choose sturdy bread like Texas toast to hold up to dipping and cooking.
- Use a serrated knife to cut bread into sticks without squishing.
- Dip sticks quickly in batter to avoid sogginess.
- Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket to ensure proper crisping; cook in batches if necessary.
- Cinnamon sugar topping is optional for a traditional flavor.
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator up to three days or freeze in a single layer, then in bags for up to two months.
- Reheat refrigerated or frozen sticks in the air fryer, oven, or microwave.
