Air Fryer Frozen Broccoli

Air Fryer Frozen Broccoli cooks frozen florets to a tender-crisp texture with browned edges using a quick air frying method. Tossing the broccoli with oil, garlic powder, and salt before cooking helps develop flavor and crisp the surface. The recipe provides options to cook in an air fryer or an Instant Pot with an air fryer lid, allowing convenient preparation of frozen vegetables without thawing.

Description

This recipe involves preheating the air fryer and coating frozen broccoli in a small amount of neutral oil alongside garlic powder and salt. The broccoli is air fried at about 400°F/200°C until it achieves sizzling, slight browning, and desired crispness, requiring occasional turning to cook evenly.

Alternatively, the broccoli can be cooked in an Instant Pot fitted with an air fryer basket and lid following a similar temperature and timing approach. Both methods yield broccoli with a roasted-like texture, despite beginning from frozen.

To ensure even cooking, it's important not to overcrowd the basket and to separate any clumped florets before cooking. Cooking in batches may be necessary for smaller appliances. The resulting broccoli offers a quick and convenient side with a balanced garlic flavor and tender-crisp bite suitable for various meals.

After cooking, liquid from melted ice often collects in the base, so careful draining is recommended. Adjust cooking time for preferred crispness. Using a calorie-controlled cooking spray instead of oil reduces the points value.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 pound broccoli frozen
  • 2 teaspoons neutral cooking oil or calorie-controlled cooking spray, generic cooking oil
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder or to taste
  • salt to taste

Instructions

To Make in the Air Fryer

  1. Preheat Air fryer to 400F / 200C.
  2. Mix frozen broccoli with oil and garlic, powder, and salt and place into the air fryer basket.
  3. Air fry for 8-14 minutes or until sizzling and browning at the edges, turning halfway through.
  4. If you want it crispier, you can air fry for a couple more minutes, but keep an eye on it so it doesn't burn.

To Make in the Instant Pot with Air Fryer Lid

  1. Put the Instant Pot Air Fryer Basket into the Instant Pot and add prepared frozen broccoli into the Air Fryer Basket (you will need to do this in batches).
  2. Lock the Air Fryer Lid, select air fryer function, set it to 400F / 200C for 20 minutes, and press start.
  3. Cook until about 10 minutes and check - this will give you and idea of how much more time is needed. Cook for about 6-8 minutes more and then check again. If not done then cook for a further few minutes.

Notes

  • Separate any broccoli florets stuck together before air frying to ensure even cooking.
  • Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket; cook in batches if necessary for even crisping.
  • After cooking, carefully drain excess water that collects from melted ice at the basket base.
  • Allow broccoli to cool slightly before eating, as it will be very hot.
  • When using an oven-style air fryer, cook on the middle tray due to uneven heating on top and bottom trays.
  • Substituting olive oil with calorie-controlled cooking spray results in zero WW Blue Plan SmartPoints per serving.
