Air Fryer General Tso's Chicken Recipe
Description
Air Fryer General Tso's Chicken uses bite-sized pieces of chicken thigh or breast coated with cornstarch and seasoning for a crisp finish from the air fryer at 350 °F. The sauce is prepared separately by simmering ketchup, soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, ginger, and red pepper flakes until slightly thickened. After air frying the chicken on both sides for a total of about 8-10 minutes and confirming doneness with a thermometer, the chicken is combined with the warm sauce to coat thoroughly. This technique provides a balance of crispy texture and a sticky, well-flavored glaze without deep frying.
Ingredients
Chicken
- 1 pound chicken thigh skinless, or chicken breast
- 2 tablespoon cornstarch
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
Sauce Ingredients
- ¼ cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoon soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon ginger
- ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
Instructions
- Set the air fryer to preheat at 350 °F for 5 minutes.
- Put the chicken in a bowl and add the cornstarch, salt, and pepper. Stir to coat the chicken thoroughly.
- Set the air fryer at 350 °F for 5 minutes and air fry the chicken.
- While the chicken cooks, make the sauce. Combine the ketchup, soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, ginger, and red pepper flakes in a saucepan.
- Cook on medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves and the mixture just starts to boil. Let it simmer for 1-2 minutes, then remove the sauce from the heat.
- After 5 minutes of air frying, flip the chicken over and cook for another 3-5 minutes until the chicken is cooked through and golden brown. Use an instant-read thermometer to ensure the chicken's internal temperature has reached 165 °F.
- Once the chicken is done, add it to the pan with the sauce and stir so that the sauce evenly coats the chicken.
- Serve with rice and green onions.
Notes
- Preheating the air fryer contributes to a crispier chicken exterior.
- Flip or toss chicken pieces halfway through cooking to ensure even browning.
- Chicken thighs provide juicier results compared to chicken breasts in this recipe.
