Air Fryer Gnocchi

This Air Fryer Gnocchi recipe yields golden, crisp gnocchi without the need for boiling beforehand. Using simple oil and an air fryer heated to 400°F, the gnocchi crisps evenly and can be seasoned or tossed with fresh ingredients like spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, and parmesan for varied serving options. The flexibility with frozen, chilled, or shelf-stable gnocchi adds convenient versatility for different pantry staples.

Description

Air Fryer Gnocchi offers a straightforward preparation method that skips pre-boiling, using oil to coat the gnocchi before air frying at 400°F. Cook times vary slightly based on gnocchi type, generally between 8 and 12 minutes, shaking the basket midway to ensure even crisping. The result is tender gnocchi with a golden exterior.

Finished gnocchi can be enjoyed warm as is or combined with ingredients like fresh chopped spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, and a sprinkle of parmesan for a slightly wilted, savory dish. Seasoning with salt and pepper after cooking helps enhance flavor without moisture loss during cooking.

The recipe notes suggest experimenting with additional seasonings and pairings, like marinara sauce, curry, cinnamon sugar, or tossing with vegetables. While layering gnocchi in the fryer basket is acceptable since they shrink during cooking, it’s advised to monitor doneness as air fryer heat levels vary.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 16 oz gnocchi works for frozen, shelf-stable and chilled, 1lb/450g
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil or vegetable oil

Serving suggestion:

  • 2 cups spinach chopped
  • 1 tablespoon sun-dried tomatoes chopped
  • 1 tablespoon parmesan
  • salt
  • black pepper

Instructions

  1. Heat the air fryer to 400°F/200°C.
  2. Add the gnocchi to a bowl and toss with the oil. (Tip: No need to pre-boil the gnocchi, whether it's frozen, chilled or shelf-stable.)
  3. Place the gnocchi into the basket of the air fryer. It’s okay if it’s not a single layer.
  4. Cook for 10 minutes for chilled (or 12 minutes frozen, 8 minutes shelf-stable), shaking the basket every 3 minutes.
  5. Check during cooking and cook for more or less time if necessary. You want it golden but not too dark.
  6. Serve warm and enjoy!
  7. Serving suggestion: Toss the hot gnocchi with chopped fresh spinach to wilt it slightly, then stir in the sun dried tomatoes and a little of the oil from the jar. Sprinkle it with parmesan, salt and pepper.

Notes

  • Cook gnocchi without boiling by tossing in oil and air frying at 400°F, adjusting time based on frozen, chilled, or shelf-stable type.
  • Shake the basket every few minutes during cooking to promote even browning and prevent burning.
  • Season gnocchi after air frying to retain crispness and allow seasoning to adhere well.
  • Layer gnocchi in the air fryer as slight overlap is acceptable because they shrink during cooking.
  • Check gnocchi at around 8 minutes to avoid excessive browning or burning, adjusting time as needed per fryer.
  • Enhance the dish by tossing with fresh spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, parmesan, or try alternative seasonings such as cinnamon sugar or curry powder for variety.
